From Arrest to Political Resurrection: Senthilbalaji's Dramatic Return

In the early hours of June 14, 2023, the Enforcement Directorate arrested Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister V Senthilbalaji in connection with a money laundering case. This legal action stemmed from a cash-for-jobs scandal that allegedly occurred during his previous tenure as an ADMK minister. Following his arrest, Senthilbalaji lost his ministerial position, underwent heart treatment, and spent over a year in jail. Many political observers believed this marked the end of his political career.

However, as Tamil Nadu prepares for another round of state elections, Senthilbalaji has made a remarkable comeback. Despite ongoing legal challenges, Chief Minister M K Stalin has entrusted him with reviving DMK's political fortunes in western Tamil Nadu. The 50-year-old politician has shifted his electoral base from Karur in central Tamil Nadu to Coimbatore South, assuming multiple roles as candidate, strategist, and the party's primary hope for capturing the western region.

A Proven Political Tactician

Senthilbalaji describes Coimbatore as his second home, belonging to the Gounder community that represents a dominant social bloc in this part of Tamil Nadu. While caste identity plays a role, his organizational skills and tactical acumen are equally significant factors in his political resurgence. Soon after the 2021 elections, Stalin placed him in charge of Coimbatore district, which was then considered a stronghold of ADMK leader SP Velumani, another Gounder leader.

His first strategic move involved removing or sidelining DMK functionaries he perceived as either inactive or colluding with the opposition ADMK. During the 2022 local body elections, Senthilbalaji brought hundreds of supporters from Karur to Coimbatore, a decision that initially sparked protests but ultimately proved successful. The DMK alliance achieved remarkable results, winning:

  • 96 out of 100 wards in the Coimbatore city corporation
  • 31 out of 33 town panchayats in the district

This demonstrated political acumen is precisely what Stalin is banking on for the current electoral battle.

Political Journey and Regional Significance

Senthilbalaji entered electoral politics in 2006, winning his first election as an ADMK candidate. Following the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, he joined the DMK in 2018 and was fielded in Aravakurichi near Karur during a 2019 byelection. In 2021, he contested from Karur, making the 2026 elections his first venture outside his traditional home turf.

Political analyst J Balasubramanian explains that the DMK had been lacking a prominent leader in the Coimbatore region since former minister Pongalur N Palaniswami. "In 2021, DMK lost all 10 assembly seats in Coimbatore district. That would've set alarm bells ringing for Stalin," he notes. Of the 57 assembly seats across eight districts in western Tamil Nadu, the party managed to win only 16 during that election.

In Karur, Senthilbalaji had already demonstrated his political capabilities when the DMK appeared weakened following the retirement of local strongman KC Pallanishamy and the 2009 death of former district secretary Vasuki Murugesan. During the 2016 assembly elections, DMK won just one of four seats in Karur district. After Senthilbalaji joined the party, they achieved a clean sweep, winning all four seats in 2021. "Senthilbalaji has a track record of delivering what his leader wants," confirms a DMK functionary.

The Uphill Battle in Western Tamil Nadu

The western region of Tamil Nadu presents significant challenges for the DMK. Once a stronghold of left parties and Congress, this area shifted toward the ADMK under the leadership of M G Ramachandran (MGR), who enjoyed substantial support among Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Dalit Arunthathiyars—communities that continue to support ADMK today.

Despite former DMK chief M Karunanidhi's efforts to reach out to Gounders by reclassifying them as a backward class, the community has largely remained with ADMK. However, DMK has managed to gain some Arunthathiyar votes due to a 3% internal reservation policy. MGR's successor Jayalalithaa continued this political legacy, which has been further nurtured by current ADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who also belongs to the Gounder community.

For Senthilbalaji, Coimbatore South represents anything but an easy victory. In the 2021 elections, BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan narrowly won this constituency by just 1,728 votes against filmstar and MNM founder Kamal Haasan, while Congress—a DMK ally—failed to make a significant impact. This time, Senthilbalaji faces ADMK's Amman Arjunan, with Vanathi having shifted to Coimbatore North.

Strategic Campaign Moves

Senthilbalaji began his campaign with a visit to the Muslim-dominated Kottaimedu neighborhood, though Arjunan claims minority communities won't be swayed by such tactics. "They've always supported us," asserts the ADMK candidate.

Nevertheless, Senthilbalaji has demonstrated sharp organizational skills through unconventional methods. He arranged for 15 men from Karur to file nomination papers as Independent candidates in Coimbatore South. "Each candidate is allowed two representatives in a polling booth. This means 30 additional booth agents for Senthilbalaji," explains Arjunan, acknowledging the strategic advantage this creates.

DMK youth wing leader Pynthamizh Pari elaborates on Senthilbalaji's maverick approach: "Our booth committees usually have 10 to 12 members. But in Coimbatore, each has 25 members, and every member should get 50 votes." Senthilbalaji's team—sometimes called the 'Karur gang'—accompanies local party workers to households, gathering feedback and working overtime. They recognize that this election could determine both their leader's political future and DMK's fortunes across western Tamil Nadu.

As the campaign intensifies, Senthilbalaji's mission extends beyond simply winning his own seat. His broader objective involves delivering the entire western region for the DMK-led alliance, making his political resurrection one of the most closely watched developments in Tamil Nadu's current electoral landscape.
