Tensions escalated in Shimla on Saturday as the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti organized a dramatic protest in the Sanjauli area, conducting a symbolic funeral procession of the state government to voice their frustration over the administration's failure to implement court orders regarding an illegal mosque.
Protest Over Unimplemented Court Orders
The Hindu organization expressed their anger through this unusual demonstration, highlighting what they perceive as the government's deliberate delay in executing the district court's directions to ensure the demolition of the unauthorized Sanjauli mosque. The protestors also condemned the continued permission for namaz prayers at the disputed site despite the court's ruling.
The timing of the protest was particularly significant as it coincided with a scheduled meeting between the Hindu organization and district administration officials. However, in a clear display of their dissatisfaction, the Sangharsh Samiti members boycotted this meeting, explicitly stating their lack of trust in the administration's intentions.
Accusations and Hunger Strike Conclusion
In strong allegations against the state government, the Sangharsh Samiti accused the authorities of showing preferential treatment toward minority communities while allegedly deceiving the Hindu population. The organization claimed this bias was evident in the government's handling of the mosque controversy.
Saturday also marked the conclusion of the group's sequential hunger strike, which had been demanding a complete ban on prayers at the controversial Sanjauli mosque. The hunger strike had been ongoing as part of their persistent campaign to pressure authorities into taking action against the illegal structure.
Legal Battle Intensifies in High Court
Meanwhile, the legal dimensions of the conflict took a new turn as the state wakf board approached the Himachal Pradesh High Court, challenging last month's district court order. The district court had previously upheld the Shimla municipal commissioner court's direction calling for the complete demolition of the entire mosque structure.
The petition is scheduled for hearing on Monday, when the High Court will decide on the maintainability of the case. This legal development adds another layer to the ongoing dispute, with both sides preparing for a prolonged legal battle.
As the situation remains tense, the Hindu outfit has issued a warning about launching a larger state-level movement in the coming days if their demands remain unaddressed. The organization's leadership indicated that Saturday's protest was merely a precursor to more extensive agitations planned across Himachal Pradesh.
