Siddhivinayak Temple Beautification Project Faces Four-Month Delay Despite Rs 80 Crore Contract

The ambitious upgradation and beautification plan for the area surrounding the iconic Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai's Prabhadevi neighborhood has failed to commence even four months after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a Letter of Acceptance to the contractor. The first phase of this significant project involves works valued at approximately Rs 80 crore.

Contractor Seeks Urgent Site Handover Amid Growing Concerns

Frustrated by the prolonged delay, the contractor has now formally written to the BMC administration requesting immediate handover of the project site and performance of the traditional bhoomipujan ceremony to officially commence construction activities. In their communication, the contractor explicitly warned that further postponement could potentially impact the overall project cost, creating additional financial complications.

Comprehensive First Phase Plans Detailed

The BMC is executing the beautification of the temple precincts through a phased approach. The initial phase encompasses extensive enhancements including:

  • Intricate stone carving and marble cladding work on compound walls, pillars, and arches
  • Structural improvements to existing buildings within the temple complex
  • High-quality flooring installation throughout passage areas
  • Construction of decorative canopies
  • Development of a basement-plus-two-storey parking facility on a plot behind the temple, designed to accommodate approximately 180 vehicles

Political Inauguration Requirements Cause Bottleneck

Despite the BMC issuing the Letter of Acceptance to the contractor on December 15, 2025, followed by a purchase order on January 27, 2026, physical work has yet to begin. Civic authorities have revealed that temple authorities have indicated construction should only commence following a formal inauguration ceremony conducted by the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

A former corporator associated with the Siddhivinayak Temple trust explained: "Initially, the purchase order faced delays due to the election code of conduct and other administrative reasons. Now that the purchase order has been formally issued, we are actively seeking appointments with the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to schedule the inauguration ceremony."

Monsoon Deadline Adds Urgency

A senior civic official expressed concern about the timing, noting: "If project commencement experiences further delays, the contractor will inevitably need to halt operations during the monsoon season, which is far from ideal for construction timelines and could significantly extend the project completion date."

The beautification project represents a major civic initiative aimed at enhancing the infrastructure and aesthetic appeal around one of Mumbai's most visited religious sites, but its progress remains entangled in procedural and political formalities.
