Once celebrated as one of Assam's prominent urban centers, Silchar now grapples with a severe and worsening infrastructure crisis. The city's roads, plagued by potholes and chronic waterlogging, have transformed daily commutes into perilous ordeals for residents. This deteriorating situation has sparked mounting public frustration, leading the Greater Silchar Citizens' Forum to launch sharp criticism against both the ruling establishment and opposition parties for their collective failure to address the pressing issue.
Non-Motorable Arterial Stretches and Safety Concerns
Forum General Secretary Sadhan Purkayastha has highlighted several arterial roads that have become virtually impassable. The Capital Point–Rangirkhari–Irongmara stretch is particularly notorious, riddled with deep craters, broken patches, and stagnant water pools. Purkayastha emphasized that commuting along this route is not only exhausting but also poses significant risks to safety. He noted that even light rainfall leaves roads muddy and dangerously accident-prone, exacerbating the already dire conditions.
The crisis impacts all segments of society, from office workers and students to essential emergency services. Residents report that ambulances frequently struggle to navigate key stretches, raising alarming concerns about timely medical access and overall public safety. The hazardous conditions have made even walking a risky endeavor in many areas.
Political Criticism and Allegations of Neglect
Purkayastha directly targeted the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of failing to maintain roads despite repeated claims of developmental progress. "If the government were truly committed to development, it would have acknowledged this crisis and presented a clear roadmap for improvement. Instead, what we see is development limited to rhetorical promises without tangible action," he asserted.
The forum also criticized opposition parties for their inability to effectively highlight the infrastructure issue ahead of recent elections. Purkayastha pointed out that despite being a major public concern, opposition groups failed to leverage the situation or push for meaningful, long-term solutions, leaving residents disillusioned with the political landscape.
Widespread Deterioration Across Silchar
The problem extends far beyond a few isolated stretches. Residents report similarly deplorable conditions on roads at:
- Rangirkhari Point-Medical College
- Meherpur
- Shivalik Park
- Veterinary Point
Some of these stretches have deteriorated so severely that they are nearly disappearing, creating navigation nightmares for daily commuters. The crisis also affects crucial link roads, including:
- Chandicharan Road
- Tarani Road
- Das Colony
- Vidyasagar Sarani
- Chittaranjan Avenue connectors
These routes are expected to play vital roles in traffic diversion during upcoming infrastructure projects, such as proposed flyovers, but currently remain in poor condition, threatening to compound future logistical challenges.
Questions Over Construction Quality and Comparative Neglect
The forum has raised serious questions about construction quality, alleging that despite crores of rupees being sanctioned for major road projects, deterioration has occurred rapidly. This points to potential substandard workmanship and possible corruption in execution. Purkayastha drew unfavorable comparisons with other Assamese cities, noting that Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and even smaller towns like Tezpur boast significantly better road infrastructure. He lamented that Silchar has fallen decades behind in terms of urban development, highlighting a stark regional disparity.
Demands for Immediate Action and Accountability
In response to the escalating crisis, the Greater Silchar Citizens' Forum has issued clear demands:

- Strict monitoring mechanisms to ensure quality in future projects

With daily disruptions, financial losses from vehicle damage, and mounting safety risks, pressure is intensifying on the local administration to take decisive action.
