Amid swirling speculations of a split in the Trinamool Congress (TMC), senior party leader Sobhandeb Chatterjee has asserted that the overwhelming majority of party MLAs will remain with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The statement comes as a strong rebuttal to rumors suggesting internal dissent and potential defections.
Accusations of Engineered Defections
Chatterjee alleged that the ruling dispensation at the centre is actively attempting to engineer defections and destabilize the opposition party. He claimed that such tactics are being employed to weaken the TMC, but maintained that the party remains united under Banerjee's leadership.
Party Unity Reaffirmed
The senior leader emphasized that despite external pressures, the TMC's legislative strength is intact. He expressed confidence that the party would continue to function cohesively, dismissing any notion of a split as baseless speculation.
Chatterjee's remarks come at a time when political observers have been closely watching the TMC's internal dynamics following recent electoral setbacks. However, he insisted that the party's rank and file are solidly behind Banerjee, and that attempts to break the party would fail.
In a statement to the media, Chatterjee said, "The majority of TMC MLAs will remain with Mamata Banerjee. Attempts are being made by the ruling party to destabilize us, but we are united." He did not provide specific numbers but urged party workers to remain vigilant against divisive forces.
The TMC has been a dominant force in West Bengal politics since 2011, and any significant split could have major implications for the state's political landscape. However, Chatterjee's assertion suggests that the party leadership is confident of retaining its legislative base.
Political analysts note that the TMC has faced challenges from both the BJP and internal factions in recent years, but Banerjee's personal popularity remains high. The party is expected to contest future elections under her leadership, with Chatterjee's comments aimed at reinforcing unity.
