SP Leader Survives Shooting Attempt by Cousin in Gorakhpur

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through political circles, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amrendra Nishad had a narrow escape after an alleged shooting attempt by his own cousin. The event unfolded on Tuesday afternoon in the city of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The Doorstep Attack: A Close Shave

The frightening episode occurred at approximately 2:30 pm on Tuesday at Nishad's personal residence. According to the police report, Amrendra Nishad was standing at his doorstep when his cousin, identified as Ravindra Nishad, allegedly fired a shot at him. The bullet, in a stroke of fate, narrowly missed Amrendra's chest.

Amrendra Nishad, who is the son of the late Jamuna Nishad—a former minister during the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government—promptly informed the police about the attack. In his complaint, he stated that after firing the shot, Ravindra Nishad also issued a direct threat. The accused reportedly warned Amrendra that he might not be so lucky next time, an act classified as criminal intimidation.

Legal Action and Political Background

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the Gorakhpur police have taken the accused, Ravindra Nishad, into custody. A formal First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under serious sections of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges pressed include Section 109 (attempt to murder) and Section 351(3) (criminal intimidation). Authorities have confirmed that a thorough investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.

This incident brings the political profile of Amrendra Nishad into focus. He had contested the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from the Pipraich constituency as a Samajwadi Party candidate. However, he lost the electoral battle to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Mahendra Pal Singh by a significant margin of 65,357 votes.

A Disturbing Pattern of Violence

This attack in Gorakhpur follows another tragic shooting incident reported earlier this month in Uttar Pradesh. In a separate case in Aligarh, a teacher at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Rao Danish Ali of the ABK School, was fatally shot in the head by two unidentified assailants. The university's Proctor, Professor Mohd. Wasim Ali, confirmed the death, while Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon stated that the search for the attackers is actively underway.

The back-to-back violent incidents in the state have raised concerns about law and order, putting a spotlight on the safety of public figures and citizens alike. The police investigation in the Gorakhpur case will now seek to uncover the precise motive behind the familial dispute that escalated to an alleged murder attempt.
