SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav Condemns UP Government Over Plummeting Potato Prices
In Lucknow, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday sharply criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for what he described as turning a blind eye to the severe distress faced by potato growers in the state. This comes amid reports of farmers dumping their potato crops on roadsides, claiming that transportation costs exceed the selling price in wholesale markets.
Parliament Protest by SP MPs Demands Government Action
Carrying placards, Samajwadi Party MPs staged a protest outside the Parliament complex in Delhi, vocally demanding immediate government intervention to save the potato growers. The demonstration highlighted the growing agricultural crisis, with protesters urging authorities to address the economic hardships plaguing farmers.
Addressing a gathering at the party office in Lucknow, Akhilesh Yadav stated, The potato growers have been pushed to the verge of losing their entire yield because of the rapidly falling prices in the wholesale market. The anti-farmer BJP and its government are not paying heed to the needs of the farmers. He accused the BJP leadership of being power hungry, prioritizing election campaigns over resolving critical farmer issues.
Historical Grievances and Broader Agricultural Concerns
The former Chief Minister further alleged that the BJP has systematically created conditions where farmers fail to recover production costs, forcing many to abandon farming. The BJP's conspiracy has hit the farmers from all directions, he said, referencing past controversies like the land acquisition bill and farm laws, which were withdrawn after widespread protests. Akhilesh also claimed that a recent deal with the United States would severely impact the agricultural sector.
Additional Criticism Over LPG Crisis and Rising Commodity Prices
In a related development, Akhilesh Yadav expressed deep concern over the rising prices of essential commodities and the short supply of LPG cylinders. He called for a parliamentary debate on these serious issues affecting the masses. It seems the government has done nothing to tackle the situation arising from the war and heading to a point where many things will get out of the common man's reach, he remarked.
Noting the BJP government's claim that Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of LPG connections in India, Akhilesh urged authorities to ensure proper supply arrangements. This dual focus on potato prices and LPG shortages underscores the SP's broader critique of governance and economic management in the state.
The protests and statements reflect escalating tensions over agricultural and economic policies, with the Samajwadi Party positioning itself as a vocal advocate for farmer welfare and public accountability.
