Chikkamagaluru: The political battle in Sringeri over alleged "Vote Chori" has taken a religious turn, with leaders from both BJP and Congress visiting various religious institutions to swear before deities regarding their innocence in the vote-counting irregularities. The controversy erupted after BJP's DN Jeevaraj was declared elected by a margin of 55 votes last week, following a recount of postal ballots ordered by the high court.
Background of the Dispute
In the 2023 elections, Congress candidate TD Rajegowda had initially been declared the winner with a margin of 201 votes. However, Jeevaraj challenged the result, demanding a recount and questioning the legality of the postal ballot process. The high court subsequently ordered a recount, which led to Jeevaraj's victory. Now, Congress leaders are accusing BJP activists of tampering with votes during the counting process.
BJP Polling Agents Take Oath
BJP polling agents BS Satish and Ramaswamy have reportedly taken an oath before the deity at a local temple, denying any involvement in irregularities during the counting period. They also visited Dharmasthala on Saturday, vowing before the God that they did not commit any malpractices. Satish stated, "I prayed to the God to bring out the truth and punish me if I have done anything wrong. Let the truth come out." Meanwhile, Jeevaraj, who won after the verification and recount, remained incommunicado.
Congress Leader Accepts Challenge
Congress' TD Rajegowda, who lost the election, has accepted the challenge and visited various religious institutions, including a temple, mosque, and church. On Saturday, Rajegowda, along with his polling agent and KPCC convener Sudhir Kumar Murolli, made a promise before Veerabhadra Swamy in Koppa. Rajegowda swore, "I did not indulge in any malpractices in the counting, and I'm ready to face consequences if I did anything against the law." He expressed confidence in his legal fight and demanded a high-level probe to uncover the truth.
Congress Demands Investigation
Murolli, who was present during both the counting and recounting, stated, "We have approached the High Court and Election Commission as per constitutional provisions. Now, we are approaching religious institutions." He added that they would go before the people, calling the tampering of votes a murder of democracy. Murolli alleged that Jeevaraj, his associate from Koppa, and government officials were involved in the conspiracy. He questioned why Jeevaraj obtained a stay on the FIR filed regarding vote tampering, arguing that it clearly indicates his involvement.
Congress leader Asgod Nagesh also condemned the alleged tampering, calling it a black mark on the constituency. The dispute continues to intensify as both sides seek divine intervention and legal recourse.
