Srivaikuntam: Swing Constituency in Thoothukkudi District

Srivaikuntam, a competitive constituency in Thoothukkudi district, has witnessed a closely contested electoral history, with representation from both Dravidian parties and the Congress. Since the 1977 Assembly elections, the seat has alternated evenly between the two major political blocs, with the Indian National Congress (INC) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) each winning five times, resulting in a 50% share of victories for both parties during this period.

Recent Election Results

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, INC candidate G. Urkavalan (also known as Oommen Chandy) emerged victorious with 73,356 votes, defeating AIADMK's S. P. Shunmuganathan by a margin of 15,445 votes. Prior to that, in the 2016 elections, AIADMK's S. P. Shunmuganathan won the seat with 65,198 votes, defeating INC's V. Rani Venkatesan by a slender margin of 3,531 votes. In the 2011 elections, Shunmuganathan again triumphed for the AIADMK, securing 69,708 votes and defeating INC's M. B. Sudalaiyandi by 21,122 votes.

Upcoming 2026 Assembly Elections

The 234-seat Assembly election in Tamil Nadu will see the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, taking on the opposition AIADMK and a resurgent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance. The campaign is centered around key issues such as welfare schemes, law and order, and the broader debate between Dravidian political identity and national integration narratives. While the DMK government is highlighting its record on industrial growth and social justice, the opposition has targeted it over allegations of corruption and concerns about power shortages.
