Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin Intensifies Campaign in Vellore Ahead of Assembly Elections

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M K Stalin conducted an extensive door-to-door campaign in Vellore on Tuesday, ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. The campaign trail saw the chief minister engaging directly with residents in what is often referred to as the Fort City of Tamil Nadu.

Stalin's Tea Shop Interaction and Local Engagement

During his campaign, Stalin made a notable stop at a local tea shop, where he drank tea and interacted with residents. This gesture was part of his efforts to connect with voters on a personal level, emphasizing grassroots engagement in the politically significant Vellore constituency.

The DMK has fielded sitting MLA P Karthikeyan from Vellore, setting up a rematch against S R K Appu of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). In the 2021 Assembly elections, Karthikeyan defeated Appu by a margin of 9,181 votes, representing 5.1 per cent of the vote share.

Key Electoral Dynamics in Vellore

Vellore's demographic composition is expected to play a crucial role in the election outcome. According to the 2011 Census, the Muslim community constitutes 24.28 per cent of the population in Vellore city, making it a key voting bloc that could influence the results.

Stalin's Political Rhetoric and Accusations Against BJP

Earlier on Monday, while addressing a public meeting in Ranipet district, Stalin asserted that the DMK would defeat the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the assembly elections. He framed the contest as a battle between the "Tamil Nadu team" and the "Delhi team," criticizing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for raising the issue of delimitation.

"In the 2026 democratic war, I have come so that we shall defeat the Delhi team and make the Tamil Nadu team win," Stalin declared, as reported by news agency ANI. He accused the BJP of using delimitation to divert attention from pressing concerns such as LPG shortages and the depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar.

"BJP is now taking the delimitation in hand. People are facing trouble without gas, and the Indian rupee has gone high against the dollar. So, to divert attention, the BJP is trying to take the delimitation issue now. This delimitation is the biggest in Indian history. If they are hiding it and trying to implement it, then surely they are against Tamil Nadu," Stalin stated.

DMK's Election Manifesto and Welfare Announcements

Stalin also highlighted the party's election manifesto, describing it as a "superstar," and announced a significant welfare scheme aimed at women voters. Under this proposal, the DMK plans to provide an Rs 8,000 coupon to women for purchasing new home appliances or exchanging existing ones, a move designed to appeal to a key demographic ahead of the polls.

Election Schedule and Political Landscape

Tamil Nadu is scheduled to go to the polls in a single phase on April 23, with counting of votes set for May 4. The main contest is expected to be between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which includes the Indian National Congress, DMDK, and VCK, and the NDA led by AIADMK, along with BJP and PMK.

Adding another layer to the electoral dynamics, actor-turned-politician Vijay is set to make his electoral debut with his party TVK, potentially turning the contest into a three-way fight. This development could reshape traditional voting patterns and introduce new variables into the election calculus.

As the campaign intensifies, Stalin's door-to-door efforts in Vellore and his strategic announcements reflect the DMK's focus on local issues and voter outreach, setting the stage for a closely watched electoral battle in Tamil Nadu.
