Sule slams Pune police over firing, says crime claims false

Pune: NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule on Thursday targeted the state government as well as Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar, asserting that the firing incident in Sahakarnagar on Wednesday night proved claims of declining crime in the city were false.

War of words over crime statistics

Recently, Sule and Kumar engaged in a war of words through an exchange of letters regarding the crime rate in Pune. The NCP (SP) working president had stated that Pune had become the crime capital of Maharashtra. Kumar countered her with statistics, claiming that crime had actually declined in the city.

Firing incident sparks fresh criticism

The firing near Shinde High School on Padmavati-Sahakarnagar Road on Wednesday night occurred against this backdrop, prompting Sule to issue a fresh statement taking a dig at Kumar. She said, “I spoke about the crime scene in Pune based on data released by the state and central governments. After the Pune police commissioner sent in the numbers, I had planned to write to the Union home minister and request him to correct their data. However, the firing took place before I could.”

Reputation at stake

The Baramati MP expressed concern that the fear of law was diminishing in the district. “Pune is known for its rich culture, but its reputation is being tarnished due to cases like firing, koyta gang attacks, hooch tragedy, and drug parties. The Sahakarnagar case was the third firing incident in a short span, exposing the deplorable law and order situation that prevails,” she added.
