Suvendu Adhikari Takes Oath as West Bengal Chief Minister

NEW DELHI: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the chief minister of West Bengal on Saturday in a grand swearing-in ceremony held in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union ministers, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, J.P. Nadda, and Dharmendra Pradhan. Also present were Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states: Tripura's Manik Saha, Assam's Himanta Biswa Sarma, Delhi's Rekha Gupta, and Uttarakhand's Pushkar Dhami.

BJP's Landslide Victory

The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a resounding victory in the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, winning 207 seats. The Trinamool Congress, which had governed the state for 15 consecutive years, managed to secure only 80 seats. This marked a historic shift in the state's political landscape.

Record Voter Turnout

West Bengal witnessed its highest-ever voter turnout since independence. In Phase I of the elections, the turnout was 93.19%, while Phase II recorded an impressive 91.66%. The combined polling percentage stood at 92.47%, reflecting the electorate's enthusiasm and engagement.

Ministers Who Took Oath

Along with Suvendu Adhikari, several other BJP leaders were sworn in as ministers. The list includes:

  • Dilip Ghosh
  • Agnimitra Paul
  • Ashok Kirtania
  • Kshudiram Tudu
  • Nisith Pramanik

These leaders will form part of the new cabinet under Chief Minister Adhikari, tasked with steering the state's development agenda.
