In a landmark move for inclusive governance, the Tambaram Corporation on Monday appointed disability rights activist B Kavitha as its nominated councillor representing persons with disabilities. This appointment is a direct implementation of the Tamil Nadu state government's policy to ensure representation for differently-abled individuals in all local bodies.

The decision was formally announced during a council meeting of the Tambaram Corporation. Following the announcement, Mayor Vasantha Kumari and Corporation Commissioner S Balachander felicitated Kavitha, honouring her new role and responsibilities. Meet Councillor B Kavitha
B Kavitha, a 35-year-old activist from Pammal, has lived with a locomotor disability since she was 14 years old. She is not new to advocacy, being the founder of the Foundation for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities based in Pammal. Her lived experience and dedicated activism make her a powerful voice for the community she now officially represents.
A Symbol of Hope and Self-Reliance
Speaking about her new position, Kavitha described it as a significant milestone. "This is a stepping stone and a symbol of hope for people like me," she stated. She emphasized the strong will within the disabled community to progress in life, despite often depending on others for certain needs. Striking an independent note, she clarified that she does not align with any political party. Her primary aim in this role is to motivate and empower other persons with disabilities to overcome societal and infrastructural challenges.
