Chennai: Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Rajmohan has reaffirmed the state's steadfast commitment to its two-language policy, remaining non-committal on the implementation of the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme. Speaking to media after distributing textbooks, uniforms, and stationery at Government Model Higher Secondary School in Arumbakkam on the first day of reopening, the minister stated that while the state stands firm on its language policy, it will not hesitate to approach New Delhi directly if the central government withholds funds on this basis.
Fee Transparency for Private Schools
Minister Rajmohan emphasized that all private schools must compulsorily publicize their fee structures. Addressing concerns over excess fee collection, he noted that such practices may have occurred under previous administrations. However, he asserted that the current government prioritizes transparency, which will foster trust and boost enrollment. Parents and students encountering issues with excessive fees can directly contact the school education department for immediate resolution.
Student Safety and Drug-Free Campuses
The minister announced measures to ensure campuses, including pathways to schools, remain drug-free. Students who are approached by anyone can file complaints with school staff, and immediate assistance will be provided. Rajmohan stressed that there is no compromise on student safety.
Teacher Vacancies and Dropout Rates
On filling teacher vacancies, Rajmohan acknowledged legal constraints affecting several appointments. Counseling and discussions will be held to make appropriate decisions. Regarding dropout rates, the minister highlighted significant progress and instructed department officials to follow up with such students and offer support.
Digital Empowerment of Schools
The department aims to digitally empower all schools, akin to model schools. While acknowledging that this cannot happen overnight, Rajmohan assured that all necessary steps will be taken to achieve this goal.
