Tamil Nadu Power Demand Surges Past 20,000 MW Amid Early Summer Heat
As summer approaches, Tamil Nadu is experiencing a significant spike in power consumption, with peak demand breaching the 20,000-megawatt (MW) mark for the first time in 2025. This surge is attributed to increasing heat and humidity, even before the full onset of the summer season.
Record-Breaking Power Consumption Figures
On Friday, the state's peak power demand reached 20,211 MW, coming within approximately 600 MW of the all-time high of 20,830 MW recorded in 2024. Notably, this year's peak demand of 20,148 MW, which was initially recorded in April 2025, was achieved as early as the first week of March, indicating an accelerated rise in electricity usage.
Similarly, daily power consumption hit 416.284 million units (Mu), the highest for the year so far. This figure is slightly lower than last year's consumption of over 436 Mu, but the highest daily consumption on record remains 454.32 Mu, set in April 2024.
Factors Driving the Power Demand Increase
Power distribution officials anticipate further growth in demand in the coming days, citing a largely dry weather forecast across the state with minimal chances of rainfall. Additionally, two key events are expected to keep power demand elevated:
- Assembly Election Campaigns: As political activities gain momentum, increased energy usage from rallies, events, and media coverage is contributing to higher demand.
- IPL Season: The ongoing Indian Premier League cricket matches are also expected to drive up electricity consumption, particularly during evening hours.
To manage this surge, Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Company Limited (TNPDCL) officials have secured power supply agreements with private generators through long-, medium-, and short-term contracts to ensure reliable electricity availability.
Rise in Solar Power Generation
Amid the growing demand, solar power generation in Tamil Nadu has also seen a notable increase. On Friday, TNPDCL absorbed 53.7 Mu of solar energy, the highest daily amount recorded so far. This surpasses the previous record of 50.8 Mu. Solar power generation peaked at 7,107 MW on the same day, with the state's installed solar capacity standing at 9,555 MW.
This boost in renewable energy is helping to supplement the power grid, although officials emphasize the need for continued reliance on conventional sources to meet peak demands.
Outlook and Preparedness
With weather conditions expected to remain hot and dry, and high-profile events like elections and IPL matches ongoing, power demand in Tamil Nadu is projected to stay high. TNPDCL remains vigilant, leveraging both traditional and renewable energy sources to prevent shortages and ensure stable power supply across the state.
