From Silicon Valley to Tamil Nadu: BJP's Tech-Savvy Candidate Ananthan Ayyasamy
Tech Pro-Turned-Politician Uses AI in Tamil Nadu Campaign

From Silicon Valley to Southern Tamil Nadu: A Political Transformation

In a remarkable career shift, Ananthan Ayyasamy has traded his high-flying technology position in the United States for the demanding campaign trails of southern Tamil Nadu. As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the Vasudevanallur (reserved) constituency in Tenkasi district, Ayyasamy is introducing innovative strategies to the regional political landscape.

A Return to Roots and Service

Hailing from Viswanathaperi village in Vasudevanallur, Ayyasamy made the pivotal decision to leave his technology job in the US and return to India in 2022, driven by a commitment to social service. Despite coming from a family with deep ties to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)—where his father and brother have been active members—Ayyasamy chose to align with the BJP. He currently serves as the BJP district president for Tenkasi district and operates a nonprofit organization named Voice of Tenkasi, which focuses on empowering farmers, providing technology education, and offering career guidance.

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in Campaign Strategy

We are actively using AI; for the campaign we are using Claude AI to do sensitivity analysis, which includes analysis of voters, constituencies and people's sentiments. It also includes predictive analysis, which helps us in refining the campaign, Ayyasamy explained in an interview. This technological approach sets his campaign apart, utilizing data-driven insights to tailor outreach and messaging effectively.

Political Allegiance and Critique of Dynasty Politics

Explaining his decision to join the BJP, Ayyasamy stated that it is the only party where hardworking individuals can potentially rise to the highest levels, contrasting it with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which he criticized for its dynasty politics. I am from a traditional AIADMK family, where my father was a member of AIADMK since M G Ramachandran started the party. My younger brother, A Manoharan, was elected as AIADMK MLA from the Vasudevanallur constituency in 2016, he noted, highlighting his familial political background while emphasizing his independent choice.

He expressed great admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, praising him for providing a corruption-free and development-oriented government. In these changing times, I have grown to admire Prime Minister Narendra Modi greatly, Ayyasamy said, aligning his campaign with Modi's vision.

Grassroots Engagement and Public Response

Ayyasamy reported a positive response from the electorate, asserting that people are seeking change and believe he can deliver it. I was with the people of Vasudevanallur for the past four years and did services ranging from employment for youths to uplifting the basic infrastructure. So, the people have built a hope that I can bring a transformation, and it's a huge uprising, he added, underscoring his long-term community involvement.

Criticism of Opponents and Campaign Ethics

He criticized Sankarankovil sitting MLA and Vasudevanallur DMK candidate E Raja, accusing him of contesting out of fear. The DMK is playing a game using money. They prioritise wealth, whereas we are garnering votes by simply articulating our works done in the past, Ayyasamy stated, positioning his campaign as one based on merit and service rather than financial influence.

Addressing Caste Dynamics and Inclusivity

On the sensitive issue of caste arithmetic, Ayyasamy, who belongs to the devendra kula vellalar community, acknowledged that politics is not free of caste considerations. However, he emphasized his universal approach: I haven't worked here for a particular caste but rather worked universally for all, and I am clear that no specific caste or religious identity should be attached to me. He highlighted that half of the members working in Voice of Tenkasi are from religious minorities, showcasing his commitment to inclusivity.

Inspiration from Tech Leader Sridhar Vembu

Ayyasamy credited Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu for encouraging his return to India, though he chose politics over business. He always insists I do business in semiconductors, but I choose politics, he added, reflecting his dedication to public service over commercial pursuits.

This unique blend of technology expertise, grassroots service, and a break from traditional political dynasties defines Ananthan Ayyasamy's campaign, potentially reshaping political narratives in Tamil Nadu's Tenkasi district.
