Drug Test Demand Rocks Telangana Legislative Council After Moinabad Farmhouse Raid
The Telangana legislative council witnessed a fiery debate on Tuesday as the issue of Eluru MP Putta Mahesh Kumar and former BRS MLA Pilot Rohith Reddy being caught consuming drugs at a farmhouse in Moinabad took center stage. Congress state president B Mahesh Kumar Goud ignited the controversy by demanding that both Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Leader of the Opposition K Chandrasekhar Rao undergo drug tests to restore public trust.
Congress Chief Calls for Widespread Testing of Public Representatives
Participating in the motion of thanks after the governor's address, Goud expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that teachers, professors, and parents are worried about their children following the arrest. "It is an absolute tragedy that individuals holding high office, those who should serve as models for society, have fallen prey to drugs," he asserted. He highlighted that during the nine-year BRS government, the drug mafia operated unchecked, with drugs being sold "like chocolates and biscuits."
Goud specifically pointed to the Moinabad raid on Saturday, March 14, where a former BRS MLA and a sitting TDP MP were arrested and tested positive for drugs. He offered to convince Revanth Reddy to be the first to undergo testing and challenged the BRS benches to bring KCR for the same, proposing to fix the "muhurtham tomorrow itself." "Let the leader of the house and leader of the opposition in the assembly first undergo tests. Then every public representative who was given B-form should undergo the test," he declared.
BRS Retorts with Readiness for Immediate Testing
In a swift response, BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan hit back at Goud, stating that all BRS legislators are ready for a drug test on Wednesday itself if a medical camp is organized. He criticized Goud for dragging the names of KCR and KT Rama Rao into the issue, warning, "We will drag you to court if you drag their names (into the issue)." This exchange underscored the intense political tensions surrounding the drug scandal.
Government's Anti-Drug Initiative and Call for Non-Political Approach
Goud emphasized that the Revanth-led Congress government has constituted a specialized team, Eagle, aimed at making Telangana a drug-free state. He urged BRS members not to view the issue as political targeting, stating, "No political targeting" is intended. The debate highlighted broader concerns about drug abuse among public figures and the need for accountability in governance.
The council session thus became a platform for heated exchanges over integrity and public service, with both parties positioning themselves on opposite sides of the drug testing challenge. As the controversy unfolds, it raises critical questions about transparency and moral leadership in Telangana's political landscape.
