Telangana Assures Uninterrupted Essential Supplies Amid Global Tensions
Telangana Ensures Essential Supply Stability Amid Global Crises

Telangana Government Guarantees Steady Supply of Essential Commodities

In a recent announcement, the Telangana government has assured citizens that there will be no disruptions in the supply of essential commodities, including ration rice, kerosene, and other Public Distribution System (PDS) items, in the coming months. This statement comes amid global tensions, such as the Israel-Iran conflict and related geopolitical events, which have raised concerns about fuel and commodity availability worldwide.

Monitoring and Enforcement Measures to Combat LPG Shortages

Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy emphasized that while the central government is responsible for LPG supply, the state is acting as a facilitator. To address persistent ground-level shortages and black marketing, the government has implemented several structural reforms. These include real-time monitoring of stock and distribution through vehicle tracking systems and a command control room at the state level. Additionally, Delivery Against Confirmation via OTP-based authentication has been introduced to ensure cylinders reach actual consumers.

Joint inspections involving the civil supplies department, police, enforcement agencies, and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are being conducted regularly to curb illegal diversion. Stringent penal actions, such as license suspensions, are being enforced against violations. So far, 1,112 cases have been booked, with 2,712 domestic cylinders and 70 small cylinders seized.

Alternative Cooking Systems and Contingency Plans

In response to reduced LPG availability, the state government has issued instructions to district collectors to promote temporary cooking alternatives. These include Piped Natural Gas (PNG), electric induction cooking, firewood, and kerosene. For vulnerable households, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has allocated 1,740 kiloliters of kerosene for Telangana, with arrangements made for distribution based on requirement.

Commercial LPG supplies have been restricted to 20% of previous consumption levels, as per central government directives, while domestic household consumers are prioritized for 100% supply. The average delivery time for LPG cylinders is currently four to six days, and consumers are advised to avoid panic booking.

Subsidized LPG Scheme and Ration Card Updates

The Mahalaxmi LPG Scheme, a flagship program, continues to provide subsidized cylinders at Rs 500 for eligible households. Currently, 42.90 lakh beneficiaries are availing of this scheme, with Rs 878.44 crore disbursed for 2.88 crore refills. Regarding ration cards, the process of issuing new Food Security Cards began in January 2025, with 15,46,906 new cards issued so far, bringing the total to 1,05,42,188. Verification and updation of beneficiary data are ongoing, and applications can be made through MeeSeva.

Agricultural Procurement and Market Price Stability

For the ongoing paddy procurement season, the Telangana government has ensured that Minimum Support Price (MSP) payments are made within 48 to 72 hours of data upload into the procurement portal. Payments are credited directly to farmers' bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). To prevent distress sales, procurement centers have been opened in every village, equipped with moisture meters, tarpaulins, and electronic weighing scales.

The Civil Supplies Department is closely monitoring retail prices of 16 essential commodities, reporting stable prices with no alarming increases. Immediate steps will be taken in coordination with other departments if any price hikes are detected.

Grievance Redressal and Future Plans

To address consumer complaints, such as extra charges during cylinder delivery or service delays, the government has warned LPG distributors against overcharging and established a toll-free number (1967) for grievances. Real-time monitoring through vehicle tracking systems helps ensure accountability. While there are no current plans to increase LPG supply or improve distribution infrastructure in high-demand regions, the government will examine the reintroduction of small LPG cylinders at petrol pumps in consultation with central authorities.
