Telangana Road Accidents Surge 20% in Two Years, Overspeeding Identified as Primary Cause

Road safety in Telangana has deteriorated significantly, with accidents increasing sharply by 20% over the past two years. According to the latest data from Telangana police, reported accidents rose from 22,900 in 2023 to 27,300 in 2025. This upward trend has been consistent since 2020, with approximately 2,000 additional cases recorded over time.

Increased Reporting and Key Contributing Factors

Regional Transport Authority (RTA) officials attribute part of this rise to more thorough reporting practices, as even minor collisions are now documented and FIR registrations have been intensified. However, they highlight four primary causes behind the surge:

  • Overspeeding
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road
  • Failure to wear helmets
  • Drunk driving

These incidents have resulted in 7,500 fatalities, averaging nearly 20 deaths per day across the state.

Fatalities Concentrated in Specific Districts

Surprisingly, Hyderabad is not the most affected area in terms of fatalities. Districts such as Warangal, Nalgonda, and Khammam reported the highest death tolls in 2025. Meanwhile, the Cyberabad and Rachakonda police commissionerates have registered the largest number of fatal accidents statewide. Together with Warangal, these regions accounted for nearly 28% of all fatalities.

Highway Networks and Pedestrian Deaths Exacerbate Crisis

Police officials explain that the high fatality rate in Cyberabad is largely due to its extensive highway network, including the Outer Ring Road, where speeding, drunk driving, and negligence are prevalent. Other major causes include mobile phone usage while driving, driver fatigue, and failure to use safety measures such as helmets and seat belts.

Beyond vehicle-related crashes, pedestrian deaths rank as the second-leading cause of fatalities in Cyberabad. The stretch between Moosapet and Patancheru has emerged as particularly dangerous, recording the highest number of pedestrian deaths. This road remains heavily congested throughout the day, with only brief periods of reduced traffic late at night, according to a senior Cyberabad police officer.

Experts Call for Infrastructure Improvements and Enforcement

Road safety experts point to overspeeding as the key factor, contributing to over 70% of accidents. In addition to human error, poor road infrastructure has worsened the situation.

"Authorities should move beyond relying on speed cameras and instead focus on improving road markings, upgrading traffic signal systems, installing clear signage, and enforcing appropriate speed limits, especially on curves," said Vinod Kanumala, a road safety expert from the Indian Federation of Road Safety.

He added that on highways and the Outer Ring Road, frequent overtaking maneuvers continue to trigger accidents. Fatigue and sudden tyre bursts further increase the danger, sometimes causing drivers to lose control and crash.

The persistent rise in accidents underscores the urgent need for comprehensive road safety measures, combining stricter enforcement with infrastructure upgrades to protect both motorists and pedestrians across Telangana.
