Telangana Implements Strict Monitoring of Petroleum Stocks Amid Global Unrest
In response to escalating global tensions and potential disruptions in fuel supplies, the Telangana government has intensified its oversight of petroleum stocks. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy provided assurances to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a virtual meeting on Friday, emphasizing the state's proactive measures to ensure availability and combat illegal activities.
Multi-Layered Monitoring System in Place
During the meeting convened by the Prime Minister with chief ministers, Revanth Reddy outlined a comprehensive monitoring framework. A state-level committee, led by the chief secretary, along with 33 district-level panels headed by nodal officers, is continuously assessing the demand, supply, and stock levels of petrol, diesel, and LPG. All necessary steps are being taken to curb black marketing, with commercial gas cylinders prioritized for hospitals, schools, orphanages, and old-age homes.
Officials are rigorously tracking stock levels and consumption rates at every fuel station across the state. According to the chief minister's office, the situation is being monitored in real time from a command control centre located in Hyderabad. Revanth Reddy highlighted that while the normal daily consumption of petrol and diesel is 36,189 kilolitres, Telangana currently maintains reserves of 1,88,210 kilolitres, indicating adequate availability for over five days.
Action Against Misinformation and Long-Term Strategic Shifts
The chief minister also addressed the issue of misinformation spreading on social media, noting that legal action is being initiated against individuals who post content creating panic over fuel shortages. Beyond immediate supply management, Revanth Reddy discussed Telangana's long-term strategy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by promoting electric mobility and renewable energy sources.
The state has fully waived road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles, while actively encouraging EV manufacturing and developing a robust battery ecosystem. As part of this transition, the government is working to convert over 1.20 lakh petrol and diesel-powered autorickshaws in Hyderabad into electric vehicles through retrofitting initiatives.
Additionally, Revanth Reddy informed the Prime Minister that the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation is progressing towards operating exclusively electric buses, with the transition already underway. This move aligns with broader efforts to enhance sustainability and energy security in the face of global uncertainties.
