Telangana Government Prioritizes Massive ₹98,000 Crore Road Infrastructure Overhaul
In a decisive move to enhance transportation safety and economic growth, the Telangana government has declared its ambitious ₹98,000 crore road development program as a top priority. Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy has issued strict directives to officials for the swift execution of this comprehensive initiative, which aims to transform the state's road network by 2028.
Addressing Road Safety Crisis with 'Arrive Alive' Program
The urgency of this infrastructure push stems from alarming road accident statistics. Minister Venkat Reddy revealed that nearly 6,500 fatalities occurred on Telangana's roads in 2025 alone. In response, the government is implementing large-scale road development alongside targeted safety measures, including the 'Arrive Alive' program designed to reduce accidents and save lives.
At a high-level review meeting attended by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, Minister Venkat Reddy emphasized that this road construction effort represents an unprecedented investment in the history of the undivided state. The ministers expressed confidence that these initiatives will position Telangana as India's number one state in road infrastructure by the end of 2028.
Major Projects Under the ₹98,000 Crore Road Development Plan
The comprehensive road development program encompasses multiple high-impact projects across Telangana:
- Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) Roads: Development of 6,000 kilometers of roads at a cost of ₹13,000 crore, with bids completed and construction set to commence shortly.
- Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway Upgrade: Transformation into an eight-lane corridor (six main lanes and two service lanes) with an investment of ₹20,000 crore.
- Safety Infrastructure at Black Spots: Construction of flyovers and bridges at accident-prone locations like Choutuppal and Chityal, allocated ₹500 crore to address dangerous areas.
- Future City to Amaravati-Bandar Port Greenfield Road: A proposed ₹20,000 crore project with alignment plans submitted to the central government, including a parallel alignment for a bullet train.
- Mannanur to Srisailam Elevated Corridor: A 52-kilometer elevated corridor with ₹8,000 crore funding to improve connectivity.
- Regional Ring Road (RRR): Described as a game-changing project, this initiative has secured ₹36,000 crore in sanctions, with the state already depositing ₹628 crore for land acquisition of the northern arm with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
- LB Nagar to Hayathnagar Double-Decker Elevated Corridor: A ₹941 crore project funded jointly by the central government (₹741 crore) and state government (₹200 crore).
- Rural Connectivity Enhancement: Construction of new roads in approximately 300 villages lacking proper connectivity through ₹148 crore approach roads, along with upgrades of single-lane roads to double-lane roads across the state.
Economic and Investment Opportunities Through Infrastructure Development
Minister Venkat Reddy highlighted that improved road infrastructure will attract large-scale industries to Telangana, creating significant employment opportunities for local youth. The government also anticipates substantial economic benefits from the prestigious Indian Roads Congress (IRC) conference scheduled for November at HITEX in Hyderabad.
This international event, which attracts contractors and infrastructure experts from across India and the world, is expected to bring investments worth over ₹20,000 crore to the state, further boosting Telangana's economic prospects.
Criticism of Previous Administration and Future Vision
During the review meeting, Minister Venkat Reddy criticized the previous government for failing to allocate adequate funds for essential road works. He emphasized that the current administration's commitment to infrastructure development represents a fundamental shift in priorities, with road safety and economic growth at the forefront of governance.
The comprehensive road development program not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also lays the foundation for long-term economic prosperity through enhanced connectivity, industrial growth, and job creation across Telangana.
