Tharoor Dismisses Need for CM Debate, Says Congress High Command Will Decide Post-Elections

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has firmly stated that there is no necessity for a chief ministerial debate within the party at this stage. He asserted that the decision regarding the chief minister will be taken by the party high command after the assembly elections, based on the views of the elected MLAs.

Tharoor's Remarks on Campaign Trail

Speaking to the media during campaign engagements, Tharoor emphasized that the ongoing discussions over the chief minister's post are unnecessary. "Congress has a clear process. The decision will be made after the election. UDF's deal is with the people," he said, adding that the front remains focused on securing a mandate from the electorate.

Tharoor also expressed confidence about the party's prospects in the Nemom constituency, stating that Congress candidate K Sabarinadhan would deliver a strong performance. He further claimed that BJP votes in the constituency would be ‘wasted', highlighting the competitive political landscape.

Internal Debate and Unity Within UDF

Tharoor's remarks come amid an intensifying internal debate within Congress over the chief ministerial face, with leaders openly backing contenders such as V D Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala in recent days. This has sparked speculation about potential divisions within the party.

Meanwhile, senior Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader P K Kunhalikutty dismissed any suggestion of discord within the United Democratic Front (UDF) over the chief ministerial issue. He reiterated that Congress would take the final call after the polls and that IUML would extend full support to whoever is chosen.

Confidence and Concerns in UDF Campaign

Kunhalikutty expressed confidence that UDF would overcome any alleged understanding between CPM and BJP in the state. He flagged concerns over attempts to split secular votes in constituencies such as Manjeshwar, claiming that the front has taken proactive steps to prevent vote division and maintain cohesion.

Referring to a recent controversy, Kunhalikutty said the party took swift action against an IUML member for making derogatory remarks against U Prathibha, MLA, adding that such behavior would not be tolerated. This underscores the front's commitment to maintaining decorum and unity.

Campaign Momentum and Political Exchanges

With the campaign gaining momentum across Kerala, leaders across UDF have sought to project a united front while downplaying internal differences over leadership. This strategic move aims to present a cohesive image to voters amidst sharpening political exchanges across the state.

As the election date approaches, the focus remains on securing votes and addressing key issues, with Tharoor and other leaders emphasizing process and post-election decisions over premature debates.
