Third Arrest Made in Shocking Kolkata Jeweller Murder Case
In a significant development in the high-profile murder case of jeweller Swapan Kamillya, the Bidhannagar Police have arrested local Trinamool Congress block president Sajal Sarkar, marking the third apprehension in this chilling investigation.
Sarkar was taken into custody from Siliguri on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, after investigators claimed his name emerged during the interrogation of two previously arrested suspects. The arrest comes exactly two weeks after Kamillya's body was discovered near a canal in New Town's Jatragachi area on October 29.
Investigation Takes Political Turn
The case has taken a political dimension with the arrest of a local TMC functionary. According to police sources, Sarkar's alleged involvement came to light during questioning of Raju Dhali and Tufan Thapa, who were arrested earlier in connection with the murder.
Family members of the deceased jeweller have made serious allegations, claiming that a day before the body was recovered, Block Development Officer (BDO) Prashanta Burman was present when Kamillya and his landlord were forcibly taken away from the jewellery shop in a vehicle.
Key Figures and Denials
The investigation has revealed connections between the accused and local officials. One of the arrested individuals, Raju Dhali, allegedly worked as a driver operating Burman's car, while Tufan Thapa was described as a contractor and close associate of the BDO.
However, BDO Prashanta Burman has strongly denied any involvement in the case, asserting that he is being falsely implicated because he had "taken steps against corruption" in his official capacity.
In a major development indicating the seriousness of the case, the investigation has now been formally handed over to the Bidhannagar Detective Department, suggesting authorities are treating this as a complex criminal matter requiring specialized investigative expertise.
Ongoing Investigation and Next Steps
With three arrests now made in the case, police are continuing their probe to establish the complete sequence of events and identify any additional individuals who may have been involved in the crime. The transfer of the case to the detective department indicates that authorities are preparing for a thorough, long-term investigation.
Local residents and business owners in the area have expressed shock and concern over the violent crime, with many calling for swift justice and enhanced security measures in the commercial neighborhood where the jeweller operated his business.
