In a decisive move ahead of the festive season, the excise department in Thiruvananthapuram has announced a major crackdown on the illegal trade and consumption of liquor and narcotic substances. The initiative, part of a special enforcement drive, aims to tackle the typical surge in related offences during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Multi-Departmental Strategy Unveiled
The plan was finalized during a district-level review meeting of the Janakeeya Samithi, held at the collectorate. The intensive special drive is scheduled to run until January 5, 2024, ensuring heightened vigilance throughout the peak holiday period. Authorities have resolved to implement a coordinated inspection regime across the district.
Checks will not be limited to traditional border check posts. The net will be widened significantly to cover locations deemed particularly vulnerable during festivities. Tourist hotspots, school premises, and commercial establishments will all see increased scrutiny from enforcement teams.
Public Cooperation and Control Room
The department has made a strong appeal for public cooperation in this endeavour. Citizens are encouraged to share any credible information related to narcotics activities. To facilitate this, a 24-hour control room has been activated. Tips can be passed anonymously through the dedicated helpline number: 0471-2473149.
Targeted Operations Across Sectors
The enforcement strategy involves a synchronized effort from multiple government agencies, each focusing on their domain of expertise:
- Drugs Control Department: Will conduct surprise inspections at medical stores to prevent the illegal sale or misuse of pharmaceutical drugs.
- Railway Police: In a joint effort, surveillance and checks will be intensified in and around railway station premises to intercept movement of contraband.
- Forest Department: Will step up vigilance along forest fringes, which are often used as smuggling routes.
- Coast Guard: Will enhance monitoring of coastal stretches to prevent the inflow of substances via sea routes.
Furthermore, to stop the interstate influx of narcotics, authorities will tighten inspections on buses. Labour camps housing migrant workers will also be subject to checks as part of the comprehensive plan.
This multi-pronged, district-wide approach underscores the administration's commitment to ensuring a safe and secure festive season for all residents and visitors of Thiruvananthapuram.
