Thiruverumbur Constituency Records Lowest Voter Turnout in Trichy for Fourth Consecutive Term

Trichy: Young voters settling abroad and migration of MSME workers have once again put the spotlight on Thiruverumbur constituency as it recorded the lowest voter turnout among the nine assembly segments in Trichy district, for the fourth term.

While the overall turnout in the constituency substantially increased from 67.1% in 2021 to 81.2% in 2026 after the SIR survey, other constituencies performed better than Thiruverumbur.

Thiruverumbur has an equal proportion of rural and urban localities but still polls lower than the completely urbanised segments. As many as 13 wards of Trichy corporation fall under Thiruverumbur. Koothappar Town Panchayat is the other urban area in the constituency, with the rest of the segment largely rural. The constituency is home to Bhel Trichy, Ordnance Factory and Golden Rock workshop. A section of the retiring officials are settled locally.

"Some of the retired officials and MSME workers who migrated still have their names in the electorate in Thiruverumbur. Many youngsters from the urbanised constituencies migrated to other places for work; many of them did not return to vote," an AIADMK functionary from Thiruverumbur said.

While there are 54 third-gender voters in Thiruverumbur, only 29 individuals voted. At 53.7%, the low turnout further reduced the overall polling percentage.

"My parents were returning from Chennai, but by the time they were back, polling was already over. Heavy traffic congestion on the Trichy-Chennai highway delayed their arrival," R Rekha, a resident of Kattur Balaji Nagar, said.

Trichy West (81.3%) and Trichy East (81.7%) marginally polled more votes than Thiruverumbur.

In 2021, the constituency polled 1,97,013 votes, and in this 2026 assembly election, Thiruverumbur polled 2,10,744 votes, an increase of only 7%. But SIR's role in removing double entries, migrated voters and deceased voters increased the overall polling percentage.
