TMC Files Formal Complaint Against Election Commission Observer
The Trinamool Congress has ignited a significant political controversy just hours before the first phase of the West Bengal assembly elections, leveling serious allegations against an Election Commission-appointed police observer. The ruling party has formally accused observer Parmar Smit Parshottamdas of conducting what it describes as a clandestine and unauthorized meeting with BJP candidate Gour Sundar Ghosh.
Allegations of Protocol Violations
In a detailed complaint submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner, TMC officials presented their case with specific allegations. According to the complaint, Parshottamdas was officially assigned to monitor the Diamond Harbour police district and was supposed to reside at the IPS Mess in Alipore as per established protocol. However, the party claims he instead checked into Room 208 of the government-run Sagarika Hotel, where he allegedly conducted private, unscheduled, and unrecorded discussions with the BJP representative.
The TMC has bolstered its allegations with purported video evidence shared on social media platform X, showing the observer entering the hotel premises and engaging with the BJP candidate. This visual documentation has become a central piece of the party's argument that proper procedures were deliberately bypassed.
Political Reactions and Demands
Senior TMC leader Derek O'Brien, accompanied by local candidates Shamim Ahmed and Pannalal Haldar, has demanded immediate action from the Election Commission. They have called for the observer's removal from his position and requested the appointment of a neutral official to oversee the Diamond Harbour constituency.
"A police observer, whose sole mandate is to ensure free and fair elections, was holding secret meetings with a BJP candidate in violation of every procedure," the TMC stated in its official complaint. "The BJP-ECI nexus is now documented through clear evidence."
The party further alleged that the Election Commission has been systematically ignoring their complaints while simultaneously filing what they describe as false cases against TMC workers at the behest of opposition parties.
BJP's Counter-Argument
The Bharatiya Janata Party has firmly rejected all allegations, presenting a completely different narrative of the events. BJP candidates Deepak Haldar and Gour Sundar Ghosh have stated that the meeting was conducted through official channels to address legitimate security concerns.
According to BJP representatives, the interaction was a formal appeal for enhanced security measures after TMC workers allegedly obstructed their election campaign activities. They maintain that the meeting represented a legitimate request for protection and did not constitute any breach of established protocol or election guidelines.
Election Commission's Role and Response
The Election Commission has deployed a total of 84 police observers across West Bengal to monitor security arrangements and maintain law and order during the assembly elections. These observers play a critical role in ensuring the electoral process remains transparent and free from interference.
As of now, the Election Commission has not taken any formal decision regarding Parshottamdas or the allegations against him. However, the controversy has significantly heightened political tensions in South 24 Parganas district, particularly in the Diamond Harbour constituency, where polling is scheduled to begin imminently.
