In a fresh blow to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a section of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs is reportedly preparing to back expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee for the post of Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly. This move directly challenges the party's official nominee, Sobhondeb Chattopadhyay, and underscores deepening divisions within the TMC following its recent Assembly election defeat.
Deepening Rift Within TMC
The development signals growing discontent among TMC legislators, many of whom are disillusioned with the party leadership after the electoral setback. Ritabrata Banerjee, who was expelled from the party earlier, has emerged as a rallying point for rebels. Sources indicate that a significant number of MLAs have pledged support to him, potentially altering the power dynamics in the Assembly.
Allegations of Forgery and CID Probe
The crisis has been compounded by serious allegations of signature forgery, prompting a CID investigation. Accusations have also been leveled against party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, further intensifying the turmoil. The TMC, which has dominated West Bengal politics for years, now faces its most severe internal challenge in recent memory.
Political Implications
If Ritabrata Banerjee secures the LoP position, it would not only embarrass the party leadership but also provide a platform for dissent within the TMC. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left Front are closely watching the developments, which could weaken the ruling party's grip on the state. The coming days are crucial as Mamata Banerjee attempts to contain the rebellion and restore unity within her ranks.
The TMC has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, but party insiders suggest that disciplinary action may be taken against the rebel MLAs. Meanwhile, Ritabrata Banerjee has remained defiant, claiming that he has the support of the majority of TMC legislators and that the party leadership must listen to the grassroots workers.
