TMC-M Exits NDA to Strengthen Grassroots Structure: Vasan

The Tamil Maanila Congress (M) has decided to part ways with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in order to strengthen its grassroots organisational structure, party chief G K Vasan announced on 14 June 2026.

Decision to Go Independent

Speaking to reporters, Vasan stated that functioning independently would allow the party to freely voice and agitate for regional causes without the constraints of coalition politics. He emphasised that this move would help the party better serve the interests of Tamil Nadu, particularly on issues such as the welfare of Tamil fishermen and rising inflation.

Focus on Regional Issues

Vasan highlighted that the decision was taken after careful consideration of the party's long-term goals. By exiting the NDA, the TMC-M aims to build a stronger connect with the people at the grassroots level. The party will now focus on organisational expansion and addressing local concerns more effectively.

The TMC-M chief also noted that coalition compulsions often limited the party's ability to take strong positions on matters critical to the state. He expressed confidence that an independent path would enable the party to be more vocal and proactive in safeguarding Tamil Nadu's interests.

Background

The TMC-M has been a part of the NDA for several years. However, recent political developments and the need for a distinct identity prompted the leadership to reassess its alliance strategy. Vasan assured that the decision was amicable and that the party remains committed to its core principles of secularism and social justice.

Political analysts view this move as a strategic effort by Vasan to revive the party's influence in Tamil Nadu politics ahead of upcoming elections. The TMC-M now plans to undertake extensive outreach programs across the state to strengthen its cadre base.
