The Tamil Nadu state government commenced the release of water for the Chithirai festival on Friday morning at a rate of 500 cubic feet per second (cusecs) through the link canal from the Vaigai dam. This action follows an official order issued on April 22, which mandated the release of 170 million cubic feet of water from April 24 to 29 in Madurai district.
Purpose of Water Release
The water release is primarily intended to support the Chithirai festival, specifically for the ceremonial procession of Lord Kallazhagar into the Vaigai river. Additionally, the water will help replenish the sources of drinking water supply wells by saturating the Vaigai riverbed within Madurai city.
Measures for Water Quality and Safety
An official from the Public Works Department (PWD) stated that the water release will be accompanied by proper sewage treatment and cleaning drives to prevent immediate pollution from waste and debris. "We will also conduct an immediate cleaning drive following the festival to ensure the cleanliness of the river is maintained," the official added.
Since the released water will flow through three districts—Theni, Dindigul, and Madurai—the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (TNWRD) has warned the public not to enter, bathe, or go into the river while water is being released.
Festival Schedule
Lord Kallazhagar is scheduled to descend into the Vaigai river on May 1, marking a key highlight of the Chithirai festival.
