A tourist died and another person is missing after a flash flood swept through a waterfall area in Thane district, Maharashtra, on Sunday. Three other individuals were rescued from the incident, according to local officials.
The tragedy occurred near a popular waterfall in the forest belt of Thane. An official explained that the weather changed dramatically late Sunday afternoon, causing intense, localized rainfall similar to a cloudburst. “The weather in the forest belt changed rapidly late Sunday afternoon, leading to torrential, localised heavy rainfall akin to a cloudburst,” the official said.
Rescue Operations and Search Efforts
Rescue teams comprising local police, disaster response personnel, and forest department officials rushed to the site after receiving reports of the flash flood. Three people were pulled to safety, while search operations for the missing friend continued. The deceased tourist was later recovered from downstream areas. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.
The area is known for its scenic waterfalls and attracts many visitors during the monsoon season. However, sudden downpours can trigger flash floods, making the region hazardous. Rescuers faced challenging terrain and rising water levels during the operation.
