Triangular Battle Unfolds in Assam's Newly Carved Makum Constituency

The newly created Makum constituency in Tinsukia district, Assam, is poised for a high-stakes triangular contest as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and Trinamool Congress (TMC) field their candidates for the inaugural election to this seat. The race features BJP's Sanjoy Kishan, Congress candidate Sibanath Chetia, and TMC's Dilip Moran, all vying to become the first-ever elected Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Makum.

Key Contenders and Their Profiles

Sanjoy Kishan of the BJP stands out as the most prominent figure in this electoral battle. The 56-year-old is a two-time MLA who has been strategically shifted by the BJP from the neighboring Tinsukia constituency to contest from Makum. Kishan boasts a formidable electoral record, having made history in 2016 by becoming the first BJP candidate to win from Tinsukia, defeating sitting Congress MLA Rajendra Prasad Singh by a massive margin of 35,069 votes. He secured another victory in 2021 with an even larger margin of 70,797 votes. Previously, he served as a minister in the Himanta Biswa Sarma cabinet before being replaced.

In a statement, Kishan emphasized his commitment to the region, saying, "Makum is a new constituency, but its people's hopes and aspirations are not new. I have served the people of this region for 10 years, and I am dedicated to bringing the same energy and dedication to Makum."

Sibanath Chetia of the Congress enters the fray as a first-time assembly election candidate at 42 years old. He highlights pressing local issues such as waterlogging during monsoons, poor road conditions, and rising youth unemployment. Chetia stated, "The people of Makum are seeking a representative who will genuinely fight for them. Congress plans to address these critical challenges through focused policies and grassroots engagement."

Dilip Moran of the TMC brings considerable political experience to the contest at 60 years old. A former BJP MLA, Moran won from the Doomdooma constituency in 2011 but lost the seat in 2016. Now contesting under the TMC banner in Makum, he hopes that this new constituency will revive his electoral fortunes and allow him to leverage his past experience for community development.

Independent Candidates and Electoral Dynamics

In addition to the three main parties, two Independent candidates—Padma Kanta Chutia and Lakhyajyoti Rajkhowa—are also in the running. However, political analysts predict that the primary contest will be concentrated among the BJP, Congress, and TMC, given their established party machinery and candidate profiles. The triangular nature of this race adds an element of unpredictability, with each candidate targeting specific voter segments based on local issues and past performance.

The creation of the Makum constituency reflects ongoing electoral boundary adjustments in Assam, aimed at better representation. This election is closely watched as it could set the tone for future political alignments in the region, especially with the BJP's stronghold being tested against emerging challenges from Congress and TMC.
