Trichy Farmers Stage Protest Over Loan Access and Paddy Procurement Issues
In a significant demonstration of agrarian distress, dozens of farmers associated with the National South Indian Rivers Interlinking Farmers' Association gathered near the Cauvery river in Trichy on Monday. The protest, organized to highlight critical issues affecting the agricultural community, took place in the vicinity of the Oyamari crematorium, drawing attention to long-standing grievances.
Key Demands of the Protesting Farmers
Led by prominent farmer leader P Ayyakkannu, the protesters articulated a clear set of demands aimed at addressing systemic problems in the agricultural sector. Their primary concerns included:
- Uninterrupted Loan Provision: Farmers demanded seamless access to loans through cooperative societies, emphasizing the need for financial support to sustain their farming activities.
- Corruption Prevention: The protest called for stringent measures to eliminate corruption at paddy procurement centers, ensuring fair and transparent transactions for farmers.
- Immediate Paddy Procurement: Farmers urged authorities to promptly procure paddy grains that have been lying stagnant, preventing potential losses and ensuring timely payments.
- Meeting with Prime Minister: The protesters sought permission to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to directly convey their grievances and seek intervention at the highest level of government.
Police Intervention and House Arrest
Following the protest, personnel from the Fort station police arrived at the scene and took action by arresting the farmers. In a subsequent development, the authorities transported the protesters to the residence of P Ayyakkannu at Annamalai Nagar. There, they were placed under house arrest, effectively confining them to the premises as a measure to contain the demonstration.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in the region, particularly regarding financial accessibility and agricultural procurement processes. The protest near the Cauvery river highlights the urgency of addressing these issues to support the livelihoods of the farming community and ensure agricultural sustainability.
