Trichy Ministers Rush Projects Before Election Code of Conduct Takes Effect

In a strategic move hours before the Election Commission of India unveiled the schedule for the upcoming state assembly elections, ministers and government officials on Sunday inaugurated and launched a flurry of projects across Manachanallur, Musiri, and Thiruverumbur constituencies in Trichy district.

Anticipating Model Code of Conduct Enforcement

Anticipating the imminent enforcement of the election model code of conduct (MCC), a series of infrastructure works were either commissioned or had their foundation stones laid across the region. This proactive approach aimed to complete key initiatives before the MCC restrictions came into play.

Major Inaugurations in Musiri Constituency

Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru inaugurated 26 completed projects in the Musiri constituency, with a total investment of ₹19.5 crore. The projects included:

  • Overhead water tanks to improve water supply
  • New public distribution system (PDS) outlets for essential commodities
  • A union office for administrative purposes
  • Rural road works to enhance connectivity
  • Additional classrooms in government schools to support education

Earlier, Minister Nehru laid the foundation stone for a commercial complex at S Kannanur town panchayat in Samayapuram, estimated at ₹2.2 crore. This complex, proposed under the Kalaignar Urban Development Scheme, will feature 18 shops and cater to devotees visiting the renowned Samayapuram Mariamman temple.

Additional Projects Across the District

Meanwhile, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi inaugurated a PDS outlet at Melakalkandarkottai in Trichy city. The facility was constructed at a cost of ₹17 lakh using the constituency development fund of Trichy MP Durai Vaiko.

Over the past week, several other projects across the district were inaugurated ahead of the MCC enforcement. These included a sports hub developed by the Trichy Corporation at Thennur and a number of sanitary complexes, highlighting a broad push to complete public works before election regulations took hold.

The timing of these inaugurations underscores the political sensitivity surrounding infrastructure announcements during election periods, as officials seek to balance development goals with compliance to electoral norms.
