Trichy Senior Citizen and TVK Cadres Face Legal Action After Election Canvassing Altercation
In a disturbing incident highlighting election-related tensions, a 61-year-old resident of Trichy has been formally charged for allegedly abusing and assaulting women cadres of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party during door-to-door vote canvassing on Wednesday night. Simultaneously, a TVK functionary faces legal action based on a counter-complaint filed by the senior citizen, underscoring the volatile nature of political campaigning in the region.
Details of the Confrontation in Sheshayee Nagar
The accused has been identified as K. Sivakumar, a resident of Shenbagaraman Street in Sheshayee Nagar near KK Nagar. According to police sources, the incident unfolded around 8:30 PM when C. Vellaisamy, TVK’s Trichy Airport Area secretary, led a group of party workers—including several women—on a canvassing drive through Sheshayee Nagar in preparation for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
As the group passed by Sivakumar's residence, he allegedly began scolding them and launched into a verbal critique of TVK president Vijay. This quickly escalated into a heated exchange between Sivakumar and the TVK cadres. Witnesses report that Sivakumar not only hurled abuses at Vellaisamy and other party members but also threw a wooden log at one of the women present.
The assault resulted in an injury to the woman's right elbow, necessitating immediate medical attention. She was subsequently admitted to Trichy Government Hospital for treatment, highlighting the physical dangers faced by political workers during election seasons.
Police Intervention and Legal Proceedings
Following the altercation, Vellaisamy promptly lodged a formal complaint at the KK Nagar Police Station. The TVK cadres demanded that Sivakumar be summoned for interrogation without delay. However, a brief argument ensued when police officials informed them that, as per protocol, elderly individuals are typically not called or interrogated after 6 PM.
After assurances from the police that Sivakumar would be questioned at the earliest opportunity, the TVK workers dispersed. Authorities have registered a case against Sivakumar under multiple legal provisions:
- Sections 296(b) and 118(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abuse and voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon.
- Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (TNPHW) Act, specifically addressing the harassment of women.
Counter-Complaint and Additional Charges
In a twist to the case, Sivakumar filed a counter-complaint against TVK functionary Vellaisamy, alleging that he was assaulted with a flagstick during the confrontation. Based on this allegation, police have registered a separate case against Vellaisamy under several sections of the BNS:
- Section 191(2) for rioting.
- Section 296(b) for verbal abuse.
- Section 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt.
- Section 351(2) for criminal intimidation.
This dual filing of complaints reflects the complex and often contentious nature of election-related disputes, where both sides seek legal recourse amid heightened political fervor.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential for violence during election campaigns, even in routine activities like door-to-door canvassing. With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, such clashes underscore the need for heightened security and adherence to peaceful political engagement. Local authorities are now tasked with investigating both complaints thoroughly to ensure justice and maintain public order in Trichy.
