CHENNAI: TVK MLA JCD Prabhakar is poised to become the speaker of the Tamil Nadu assembly after filing his nomination papers for the post with assembly secretary K Srinivasan on Monday. Prabhakar, who secured victory from the Thousand Lights constituency in the 2026 assembly election, is expected to be elected unopposed when the newly constituted house convenes on Tuesday.
Experienced Legislator Takes the Helm
The senior leader, a former AIADMK MLA who joined TVK ahead of the elections, is among the most senior legislators in the ruling combine. He played a crucial organizational role in Vijay’s campaign and contributed significantly to the preparation of the party’s manifesto. His appointment is seen as an attempt by the Vijay-led government to balance the party’s youthful image with legislative experience.
Electoral Performance
The 73-year-old leader defeated DMK’s Ezhilan Naganathan in Thousand Lights by a margin of over 12,000 votes, demonstrating his strong electoral appeal. His vast political experience is expected to bring stability to the assembly proceedings.
Observers note that Prabhakar’s elevation reflects the party’s strategy of combining fresh energy with seasoned leadership. As the assembly prepares for its first session, all eyes are on the smooth transition of power in the speaker’s office.
