Kolkata/Kalyani: The deaths of two Trinamool Congress workers in Hooghly and Nadia districts on Tuesday have ignited a fierce political confrontation, with the party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee accusing the state administration of remaining a mere "spectator" to post-poll violence.
Abhishek Banerjee's Allegations
In a post on X, Banerjee alleged that "BJP-backed miscreants" attacked Trinamool worker Somnath Acharya in Hooghly's Polba-Dadpur area under the Saptagram constituency. Acharya later succumbed to his injuries at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In a separate incident, TMC worker Tapan Shikdar, who was allegedly assaulted in Nadia's Chakdaha, died at NRS Medical College and Hospital.
BJP's Response
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha rejected the allegations, claiming that the deaths stemmed from "internal conflicts within TMC." He dismissed any involvement of BJP workers and accused the ruling party of trying to divert attention from its internal feuds.
The incidents have heightened tensions in the state, with both parties trading accusations. The TMC has demanded a thorough investigation, while the BJP has called for an impartial probe into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Local authorities have registered cases and are investigating the matter. The political climate remains charged as the state gears up for upcoming elections.
