Madikeri: The United Kodava Organization (UKO) has urged the government to exempt tax on the Kodava traditional houses known as Ain Mane. The organization has alleged that gram panchayats are imposing arbitrary taxes on these ancestral homes and demanded their immediate withdrawal.
UKO President Expresses Concern
In a press statement, UKO president Manju Chinappa stated that complaints have been received regarding gram panchayats levying exorbitant taxes on Ain Manes in the district. He demanded a revision of these taxes and a complete exemption for all Ain Manes in Kodagu. Chinappa emphasized that Ain Manes are sacrosanct places, serving as the divine abode of ancestors and clan deities.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Chinappa explained that Kodava elders, who followed the joint family system, built large-sized Ain Manes centuries ago. These houses have been central to family worship and rituals for generations. Although joint families have largely disappeared, Ain Manes are still maintained despite numerous challenges, with specific families assigned to preserve them.
Challenges in Preservation
Maintaining Ain Manes is a significant challenge today. Chinappa condemned local bodies for imposing high taxes on these traditional structures, calling it condemnable. He noted that when clans are struggling to protect their culture and heritage, doubling taxes further hurts the sentiments of Kodava clans.
Call to Action
Chinappa added that the issue will be brought to the attention of MLAs. He appealed to residents not to pay taxes on Ain Manes and warned that if taxes are forcibly collected, a fierce fight will be launched.
