Umreth Byelection Sees 59.04% Turnout, Peaceful Voting

Gandhinagar: Voting for the Umreth assembly constituency byelection concluded without any major untoward incident on Thursday, with 59.04% of voters exercising their franchise. A statement by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) confirmed that a mock poll was conducted on EVMs at each polling station before voting began, which was attended by polling agents appointed by the candidates.

Constituency Details and Voter Demographics

The Umreth assembly constituency comprises 46 villages from Umreth taluka, along with areas of Odh, Umreth, and Boriyavi municipalities. A total of six candidates contested the election. The electorate consisted of 1,26,545 male voters, 1,19,072 female voters, and 6 other voters, bringing the total to 2,45,623 eligible voters.

Polling Station Arrangements

Polling was conducted across 306 polling stations, with 68 located in urban areas and 238 in rural areas. The CEO's office stated that webcasting facilities were established to monitor all activities at polling stations. Considering the summer heat, facilities such as ORS sachets and sheds were set up at all polling booths in the constituency. Additionally, voter assistance booths were established to provide necessary information to voters.

The bypoll was seen as a crucial test for the ruling party and the opposition, with both sides putting in efforts to mobilize voters. The peaceful conduct of the election was appreciated by election officials and observers.
