UP Budget 2026-27: Major Push for Braj Region Development

Uttar Pradesh Unveils Major Development Push for Braj Region in 2026-27 Budget

In a significant move aimed at boosting tourism, heritage conservation, and infrastructure, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a major development push for the Braj region in its 2026-27 budget. Finance Minister Suresh Khanna presented the budget, totaling Rs 9,12,696.35 crore, in the state assembly on Wednesday, outlining detailed sector-wise allocations with a special focus on the culturally rich Braj belt.

Tourism and Heritage Projects Receive Substantial Funding

The budget includes Rs 30 crore for the integrated development of Bateshwar, the ancestral village of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This ambitious project aims to transform the Yamuna-side cluster of 101 ancient Shiva temples into a major religious tourism hub, potentially attracting pilgrims and history enthusiasts from across the country.

Another Rs 30 crore has been allocated for the under-construction Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum near the Taj Mahal. This museum is expected to broaden Agra's tourism narrative beyond its Mughal legacy by adding a new historical dimension, showcasing the Maratha warrior king's legacy and creating a more diverse visitor experience.

Healthcare Infrastructure Gets a Major Boost

Healthcare in the region received substantial attention, with over Rs 130 crore sanctioned for Agra's Sarojini Naidu Medical College. This allocation includes Rs 125 crore for constructing a new modern building and Rs 5.5 crore for procuring advanced medical equipment. These investments are expected to significantly enhance medical facilities and patient care capabilities in the region.

Infrastructure Development Across Key Cities

The government has set aside Rs 800 crore for infrastructure development in Mathura-Vrindavan, as well as Meerut and Kanpur. Officials indicated that the funds for Mathura-Vrindavan will be specifically used for road widening, creation of parking spaces, ghat beautification, and installation of smart lighting systems. The primary aim is to scientifically manage the heavy footfall during festivals and special occasions, improving both safety and visitor experience.

Tourism Industry Welcomes the Proposals

Tourism industry representatives have welcomed the budget proposals enthusiastically. Amulya Kakkar, president of the Tourism Guild of Agra, stated that the budget would significantly boost the tourism sector in Agra and Mathura. "The allocation for Mathura-Vrindavan and Rs 750 crore for the Jewar airport is a huge relief. This will significantly strengthen the Agra-Mathura tourism circuit. With better infrastructure and improved connectivity, overnight tourist stays will increase, benefiting the entire ecosystem, including hotels, handicrafts and tourist guides," Kakkar explained.

The comprehensive budget allocations demonstrate the Uttar Pradesh government's commitment to developing the Braj region as a premier tourism and cultural destination while simultaneously improving essential infrastructure and healthcare services for residents and visitors alike.
