Uttar Pradesh Fuel Situation: Officials Attribute Rush to Rumors, Not Supply Crisis
In Uttar Pradesh, the current fuel scenario is being characterized by officials and dealers not as a crisis of supply, but as one driven by sudden and excessive consumption, largely triggered by rumors circulating on social media platforms. This clarification comes amid reports of heightened anxiety among motorists across the state.
Sharp Spike in Lucknow's Fuel Consumption
Data from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) fuel stations in Lucknow reveals a dramatic increase in daily fuel consumption between March 21 and March 25. Consumption jumped from approximately 7.23 lakh litres per day to nearly 12.07 lakh litres per day, representing a significant surge. Officials have directly linked this spike to panic buying, which emptied retail tanks at a faster-than-usual rate, thereby fueling further rumors of an impending shortage and creating a vicious cycle of rush and anxiety.
What began as scattered messages on social media soon escalated into a statewide scramble, with drivers rushing to fill their tanks under the false impression of a fuel shortage. Sarvesh Vajpayee, a member of the Lucknow Petrol Dealers Association and owner of SR Filling Station near Engineering College, emphasized that petrol pumps are operating continuously with sufficient stock.
"There is no need for people to panic or store fuel. Petrol and diesel are available in adequate quantities, and supply is smooth," Vajpayee stated, urging calm among consumers.
Local Disruptions Amid Adequate State Reserves
Despite assurances, some local disruptions were observed. For instance, at a privately owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) fuel station near South City in Lucknow, fuel sales were temporarily halted by 1 PM on Thursday. However, operations resumed by 3 PM after a replenishment arrived, highlighting the transient nature of the issue.
At the state level, coordinator Sanjay Bhandari maintained that there is no actual fuel shortage in Uttar Pradesh. He provided detailed figures, noting that the state's 13,168 petrol pumps currently hold sufficient reserves, with a total availability of around 20 to 22 days' worth of fuel.

- Oil company depots hold an additional 16 to 17 days of stock.
Bhandari acknowledged a nearly 30% rise in fuel demand over the past three days, attributing it directly to panic buying. He stressed that the supply chain remains robust and capable of meeting normal consumption levels.
Dealers Highlight Changed Supply Mechanism
Virendra Pratap Singh, chairman of the Lucknow Petrol Dealers Association, pointed out that the fuel supply mechanism has undergone changes since the onset of the West Asia conflict. "Earlier, tankers were dispatched proactively. Now, stations are supplied against credit limits or advance payments," he explained. This shift in procedure may have contributed to perceptions of delay, but not an actual shortage.
Ranjeet Kumar, president of the Uttar Pradesh Petrol Dealers Association, echoed these sentiments, urging the public not to believe unverified information. He insisted that supplies from major oil companies—IOCL, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), and BPCL—remain smooth and uninterrupted.
Government Warns Against Misinformation
The Uttar Pradesh government has issued a stern warning against individuals spreading misleading information on social media regarding fuel availability. Authorities have stated that such rumors are being circulated by "mischievous elements" aiming to create panic among the populace.
"Those found spreading false messages regarding fuel shortage will be identified and face strict legal action," officials declared, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining order and preventing unnecessary public distress.
