UP Government Proposes Interim Minimum Wage Hike for 74 Worker Categories
The Uttar Pradesh government has put forward recommendations for an interim increase in minimum wages that will encompass a broad spectrum of 74 distinct categories of workers. This significant move is designed to extend financial relief to employees across diverse sectors, addressing the challenges posed by escalating living costs.
Extensive Coverage Across Multiple Sectors
Among the numerous beneficiaries are individuals employed at private libraries, coaching centres, pharmacies, nursing homes, clubs, brick kilns, domestic worker supply agencies, and petrol pump attendants. The initiative is poised to deliver wide-ranging coverage, offering support to workers in commercial establishments, factories, aerated drink manufacturing units, tin printing presses, furniture units, private coaching centres, and textile weaving houses, among many others.
A source within the labour department highlighted that "the move is likely to provide a wide coverage, bringing relief to workers employed in diverse sectors". This comprehensive approach ensures that a substantial portion of the state's workforce will benefit from the revised wage structure.
Inclusion of Manufacturing and Agro-Based Industries
The list of beneficiaries extends to workers engaged in various manufacturing activities, including:
- Rubber and plastic products
- Glass and cement goods
- Metal fabrication
- Garments, handloom, and zari work
- Bakery and biscuit units
- Paper and cardboard industries
- Small engineering units
Additionally, agro-based industries such as rice mills, flour mills, oil mills, and dairy units are also covered under the new wage recommendations. This inclusion underscores the government's effort to support both traditional and essential economic sectors.
Construction, Infrastructure, and Services Sectors
Construction and infrastructure-related workers will also gain from the revised wages. This category includes individuals involved in:
- Road construction
- Irrigation projects
- Pond excavation
- Stone crushing operations
The order further extends to transport and mechanical services, covering automobile repair workshops, transport companies, and logistics operations. The services sector forms a significant part of the coverage, reflecting its growing importance in the state's economy.
Informal and Support Services Coverage
The notification is expected to encompass a large number of workers in informal and support services, including:
- Carpentry and tailoring
- Cloth dyeing and housekeeping
- Sanitation services
- Private security services
This broad inclusion highlights the government's intent to address the needs of workers in both traditional industries and emerging service segments, ensuring a wide spectrum of the workforce in Uttar Pradesh is covered.
Implementation and Monitoring
Sources indicate that the interim revision aims to provide relief to workers amid rising living costs while ensuring a broad-based impact across sectors.
