Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Approves Enhanced Wheat Procurement Policy for 2026-27 Season
The Uttar Pradesh state cabinet has officially sanctioned the wheat procurement policy for the upcoming 2026–27 marketing season, establishing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) at Rs 2,585 per quintal. This decision aligns with the rates previously announced by the central government, ensuring consistency in agricultural support mechanisms across the nation.
Significant Increase in MSP to Boost Farmer Returns
The newly announced MSP represents a substantial increase of Rs 160 per quintal compared to the previous year's rate. This strategic move is specifically designed to provide better financial returns to farmers, thereby incentivizing wheat cultivation and procurement throughout the state. By enhancing the MSP, the government aims to strengthen the economic security of agricultural communities and promote sustainable farming practices.
Comprehensive Procurement Timeline and Infrastructure
According to the cabinet's resolution, the wheat procurement drive will be conducted from March 30 to June 15, covering the peak harvesting period. To facilitate a seamless and efficient procurement process, the state government has planned an extensive logistical arrangement. This includes the establishment of approximately 6,500 purchase centres across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh, ensuring widespread accessibility for farmers.
Designated Agencies and Technological Integration
The procurement exercise will be undertaken by eight designated agencies, each playing a crucial role in the operation:
- Food Corporation of India
- Uttar Pradesh Mandi Parishad
- Pradeshik Cooperative Federation
- Pradeshik Cooperative Union
- Uttar Pradesh State Warehousing Corporation
- National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India
- National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India
In a bid to modernize the procurement process, the state government will deploy electronic Point of Purchase (e-PoP) machines for biometric verification of farmers at all procurement centres, including mobile units. Each transaction at mobile procurement centres will also capture geo-location data, enhancing transparency and accountability.
Efficient Payment System and Expected Outcomes
Payments to farmers will be made directly into their bank accounts through the government's financial management system, with a concerted effort to complete transactions within 48 hours of procurement. This direct benefit transfer mechanism aims to eliminate delays and ensure timely compensation for farmers.
The Uttar Pradesh government anticipates that the increased MSP, coupled with an extensive procurement network, will maximize wheat purchases while safeguarding farmers' interests. Additionally, this initiative is expected to ensure adequate stock for the public distribution system, contributing to food security in the region.
