Uttarakhand CM Suspends 6 Police in Mining Scandal

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Takes Swift Action Against Police-Mining Nexus

In a decisive move against corruption, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered the immediate suspension of six police personnel stationed at the Iqbalpur outpost in Haridwar district. This action follows the emergence of damning phone call recordings on social media, which allegedly expose their collusion with operators of illegal mining activities.

How the Scandal Unfolded: A Whistleblower's Ordeal

The case came to light on Wednesday when Nadim Ahmad, a resident of Latherdeva village, filed a formal complaint via the Chief Minister's helpline. He reported unauthorized soil mining from agricultural fields in the neighboring Harjoli village. His complaint was promptly forwarded to the Iqbalpur police outpost, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Jhabreda police station.

Shortly after filing, Nadim received a call from the outpost, informing him that no mining activity was occurring in Harjoli. However, in a shocking twist, he then received a second call, purportedly from the same policeman. This time, the caller mistakenly alerted mining operators about Nadim's complaint, instructing them to "stop the activity immediately." The caller further demanded a payment of Rs 10,000 to the outpost in-charge for facilitating their illegal operations.

Nadim, demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, recorded both calls. He subsequently uploaded the recordings to social media, revealing that the police had erroneously contacted him instead of their intended recipients in the mining mafia. In a distressing revelation, Nadim stated that police routinely disclose the identities of complainants to these operators, leading to assaults. "My identity is now public, and I fear for my life. I urgently need protection," he pleaded.

Immediate Suspensions and Launch of Detailed Investigation

Acting on Chief Minister Dhami's directive, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Navneet Singh Bhullar suspended the following six officers:

  • Sub-Inspector Naveen Singh Chauhan (Outpost In-Charge)
  • Head Constable Virendra Sharma
  • Head Constable Harendra Singh
  • Constable Vipin Kumar
  • Constable Devesh Singh
  • Constable Pradeep

SSP Bhullar confirmed that a comprehensive investigation has been entrusted to the Superintendent of Police (Rural). "Prima facie, evidence indicates the involvement of these policemen in collusion with individuals engaged in illegal mining. The SP (Rural) has been instructed to conduct a thorough and detailed inquiry into the entire matter," he stated.

Chief Minister's Stern Warning and Commitment to Justice

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has mandated an impartial and expedited investigation. He emphasized that strict legal action will be taken against any officer found negligent in their duties or involved in improper activities. This firm stance underscores the state government's zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and its commitment to upholding the rule of law, particularly in matters of environmental degradation and public safety linked to illegal mining.

The swift administrative response aims to restore public trust and ensure that such collusion between law enforcement and criminal elements is decisively rooted out from the system.
