Vadodara Police Launch Massive Pre-Election Security Operation
In a significant move to ensure law and order ahead of the upcoming civic elections, Vadodara police have detained more than 3,650 persons over the past three weeks. This extensive crackdown involves enforcement under multiple laws, including the Prohibition Act, Gujarat Police Act, and the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA).
Targeting Criminal Elements for Peaceful Polls
A police official emphasized the operation's goal, stating, "We want to ensure that those with criminal backgrounds do not create disturbances during campaigning and voting." The detentions are part of a broader strategy to maintain public safety and electoral integrity.
Among those detained, the breakdown includes:
- 841 individuals booked for wrongful restraint
- 913 persons charged with assault
- 1,076 cases involving the use of criminal force
- 29 individuals held under the stringent PASA provisions
Intensified Vehicle Checks and Traffic Enforcement
Police have ramped up surveillance at all 11 check-posts across Vadodara, intercepting suspicious vehicles to prevent unlawful activities. So far, approximately 15,000 vehicles have been subjected to thorough inspections.
This vigilance has led to 93 cases registered for drunk driving, highlighting the focus on road safety alongside election security.
Crackdown on Liquor Smuggling and Prohibition Violations
The operation has also targeted liquor smuggling, with police seizing over 7,492 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL). The estimated value of this contraband exceeds Rs 37 lakh.
In connection with these seizures, authorities have registered 908 cases under the Prohibition Act, underscoring the strict enforcement of Gujarat's alcohol ban.
Weapon Custody and Enhanced Surveillance Measures
To further curb potential violence, police have taken custody of 1,842 weapons from civilians. Exemptions from this measure have been granted only to bank security personnel and sport shooters, ensuring that legitimate needs are accommodated while reducing risks.
Additional security steps include intensified night patrolling and the close monitoring of sensitive areas through advanced CCTV surveillance systems. These efforts aim to provide real-time oversight and quick response capabilities during the election period.
