Varanasi's Economic Transformation: A Rs 35,000 Crore Infrastructure Revolution

As the Yogi Adityanath government marks nine years in office, Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Khanna has unveiled staggering figures showcasing Varanasi's unprecedented development. In a press conference held in the city, Khanna detailed how Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency has undergone a massive infrastructure push, receiving investments totaling Rs 35,000 crore, which has propelled its global identity.

Economic Metrics: A Story of Explosive Growth

Khanna highlighted that Varanasi's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has skyrocketed from Rs 22,586 crore in 2017 to an impressive Rs 56,900 crore today. This represents a remarkable increase, underscoring the district's rapid economic expansion. Additionally, the per capita income in Varanasi has reached Rs 1,14,685, reflecting improved living standards and prosperity among residents.

The finance minister attributed this growth to comprehensive development and construction initiatives that have established Kashi as a model urban center, blending spiritual, cultural, and modern elements seamlessly.

Infrastructure Projects: A Massive Investment Drive

Over the past nine years, Varanasi has witnessed the completion of 486 projects valued at Rs 35,000 crore, with an additional Rs 18,000 crore worth of works currently in progress. Khanna emphasized that over Rs 35,156 crore was specifically allocated to infrastructure, resulting in a 5% expansion of the urban area.

Key projects that have contributed to this transformation include:

  • Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham, enhancing the spiritual landscape.
  • Ring Road and Smart City initiatives for improved connectivity and urban management.
  • Redevelopment of Ganga Ghats, preserving heritage while boosting tourism.
  • Panchkroshi Yatra Marg, facilitating pilgrimage routes.
  • Modern health institutions and expansion of digital services.
  • Financial assistance programs for farmers and entrepreneurs.

Future Developments: Ambitious Plans on the Horizon

Looking ahead, Khanna revealed ambitious plans to further elevate Varanasi's status. A Kashi Sport City Township is proposed on 100-150 acres in Ganjari village, near the ongoing international cricket stadium, featuring cutting-edge facilities. To alleviate traffic congestion from heavy vehicles, a Transport Nagar is being developed on 48 hectares.

An Integrated Divisional Office Complex (ICCC) is underway on 2.6 acres in the divisional commissioner's office compound, aiming to consolidate 58 departments into a single building for enhanced efficiency. The construction of the Kajjakpura Bridge, costing Rs 144 crore, has already been completed.

Upcoming projects set for completion soon include:

  1. International Cricket Stadium in Ganjari.
  2. Ropeway systems for improved transportation.
  3. Hydrogen power vehicles for water transport.
  4. Expansion of the airport terminal and runway.

Statewide Achievements Under the Yogi Regime

Khanna also outlined Uttar Pradesh's broader accomplishments, noting that the state's economic growth is now discussed globally. Improved law and order has accelerated development, with 18,452 hamlets receiving electricity connections, benefiting 1.18 lakh people. The government has provided jobs to 9 lakh individuals, and the agricultural growth rate has surged from 8% to 18%.

Under the Ayushman Yojana, 7 crore people have accessed medical treatment, highlighting advancements in healthcare. "We are continuously creating new dimensions of development under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath," Khanna stated.

The press conference coincided with the closing ceremony of a three-day exhibition showcasing the state's development journey. Khanna inspected stalls set up by various departments and attended a film screening commemorating the government's nine-year milestone.
