In a shocking incident of mob frenzy, locals ransacked a liquor pickup truck and made off with numerous bottles of alcohol after the vehicle met with an accident near Basireddypalli in SR Puram mandal of Chittoor district on Saturday.
Accident Details
According to the SR Puram police, a liquor consignment was being transported from Chittoor to Karvetinagaram. As the vehicle crossed Basireddypalli village, one of its tyres suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control. The truck overturned, spilling cartons of liquor across the road.
Mob Looting
Villagers who gathered at the scene took advantage of the situation, grabbing as many liquor bottles and cartons as they could carry. The chaotic scene turned into a mad rush as people scrambled for the alcohol. By the time local police arrived after being alerted, nearly half of the consignment—worth an estimated Rs 10 lakh—had been stolen.
Police Response
The SR Puram police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations into the incident. The injured pickup truck driver was rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment.
This incident highlights the lawlessness that can erupt in rural areas during moments of perceived opportunity. Authorities are now working to identify the perpetrators and recover the stolen goods.
