In the bustling heart of East Delhi, Vivek Vihar is a neighborhood perpetually alive with activity. Cars navigate tight parking spots, vendors engage with regular patrons, and conversations echo from balconies towering three to four stories above the streets. This dynamic environment defines the area, shaped by the daily lives of residents who have watched it transform over the years.
Resident Memories: A Glimpse into the Past
Sanjay Goyal, a long-time resident of A Block since 1983, recalls a different era. "Back then, the colony was developed but houses were limited to the ground floor. Roads were open and wide," he said. Today, he notes, the roads feel narrow as buildings have risen to four floors, and population density has surged. "Earlier, one house had one family of four-five people; now one house can have 20 people." Water supply, once abundant due to lower usage, remains a persistent issue. Despite these changes, Goyal emphasizes Vivek Vihar's core strength: "The biggest plus point is the strong sense of unity among people, wherever they come from. All festivals and school functions are celebrated together, reinforced by an active residents' network and mutual respect."
Current Challenges and Civic Efforts
Madan Mittal, a resident of B Block for 40 years, shares similar sentiments. "I have been living in the area with no major problems," he stated, praising the well-maintained parks where many residents have hired private gardeners. He highlights ongoing civic improvements: "Work on the sewerage network is being done, and roads and lanes are also being developed." However, Mittal points to congestion as a primary concern, citing street vendors and hawkers as contributors to traffic issues.
Ashok Gupta, a 53-year-old businessman residing since 2001, underscores the social fabric. "There is strong social cohesion. Neighbors support each other in celebrations and crises alike." Yet, he calls for better infrastructure and parking to ensure growth does not compromise quality of life.

Like many older colonies in Delhi, Vivek Vihar stands at a critical juncture. It grapples with the pressures of increased density and urban development while holding onto a resilient community spirit. Residents continue to collaborate, addressing problems collectively and preserving the neighborhood's unique identity amidst rapid change.
