Voter List Shake-Up in Mamata's Bhowanipore Constituency

Mass Voter Reinstatement Reshapes Bhowanipore Battlefield Ahead of Bengal Polls

In a significant development, Trinamool Congress workers in Kolkata's Bhowanipore constituency recalibrated their campaign strategies on Tuesday after discovering that approximately 10,000 out of over 14,000 voters previously under adjudication were reinstated as eligible voters. This constituency is the focal point of a high-stakes electoral battle between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP challenger Suvendu Adhikari.

Voter List Revisions Bring Clarity Amidst Electoral Uncertainty

Initially, Bhowanipore had 2,06,295 voters. The first round of deletions removed 44,786 names, followed by a second revision that eliminated an additional 2,342 voters and added 18 new ones, while placing 14,154 names under adjudication. According to party sources, judicial officers declared nearly 10,000 of these adjudicated voters eligible, reinstating them on the electoral list.

A Trinamool councillor in Bhowanipore commented, "The mathematics was becoming extremely complicated due to the uncertainty surrounding the number of voters still under adjudication. This constituency has already lost a significant number of valid voters, but fortunately, 73% of those under adjudication have been accepted back into the system. Now, we have a clear understanding of the electorate and will plan our campaign accordingly."

Ward-Level Variations Highlight Disparities in Voter Reinstatement

Another councillor, whose ward saw more than 500 out of 775 adjudicated voters reinstated, outlined plans to assist the remaining 270-odd excluded voters. "We will collect documents from these voters and submit fresh applications to the tribunal over the next two days. In the past 48 hours, I have personally handled 44 applications and forwarded them to the tribunal. This work will continue until Thursday," the councillor stated.

However, stark variations persist at the ward level. For instance, minority-dominated Ward 77 witnessed nearly 79% of its adjudicated voters cleared, whereas Ward 82, overseen by Mayor Firhad Hakim and another minority-predominant ward, recorded the highest exclusions, with over 600 of 1,020 voters declared ineligible.

Political Calculations Intensify as Voter Composition Evolves

The evolving voter composition has sharpened political strategies. Key wards such as 70 and 72, with a sizeable Gujarati electorate, have emerged as critical battlegrounds. Both Trinamool and BJP are intensifying outreach efforts among non-Bengali communities, including Gujaratis, Sikhs, Marwaris, and Biharis.

Suvendu Adhikari's entry into Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's home turf has further heightened the contest. As the only leader to have defeated Banerjee in a post-2011 assembly election, he brings both symbolic weight and momentum to the BJP's campaign. The BJP is banking on consolidating sections of the non-Bengali vote amidst this electoral churn.

High Stakes for Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool's Campaign Shift

For Mamata Banerjee, the stakes are equally high. Having represented Bhowanipore since 2011, she has set a target to achieve a victory margin exceeding 60,000 votes. Her previous wins reflect a fluctuating trajectory—from a margin of over 54,000 votes in the 2011 byelection to around 25,000 in 2016 against Congress's Deepa Dasmunshi.

In response, Trinamool has deployed a tightly coordinated campaign structure, with senior functionaries such as Firhad Hakim, Subrata Bakshi, and Javed Khan overseeing operations across eight wards. However, party insiders indicate a decisive pivot away from voter list arithmetic. "With the numbers settling, the focus is now back on street-level mobilisation," said a senior functionary.

This strategic shift will be on full display on Wednesday when Mamata Banerjee hits the campaign trail with a major roadshow—her first since announcing her candidature—before filing her nomination later in the day.
