Congress Leader Vijay Wadettiwar Rejects Apology Claims, Targets US Trade Deal
Nagpur: Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Saturday issued a firm denial regarding reports that he had apologized in connection with the Chandrapur mayoral election loss. He characterized these claims as "mischievous and politically motivated," asserting that vested interests are behind the dissemination of such stories.
"Why Should I Apologize?" Wadettiwar Questions Media Reports
Addressing the media in Nagpur, Wadettiwar stated, "I have done nothing wrong. Why should I apologise?" He alleged that certain groups are deliberately planting false narratives to create confusion and tarnish his reputation. Taking a direct swipe at his detractors, the Bramhapuri MLA remarked that those "who could not win their own municipal council are now questioning others," suggesting the reports are an attempt to divert attention from their own political failures.
Statewide Protest Announced Against India-US Trade Agreement
Shifting focus to broader policy issues, Wadettiwar announced a statewide protest scheduled for March 7 in Yavatmal. He warned that the proposed India-US trade agreement would strike at the "very roots" of Indian farmers, particularly impacting those in Maharashtra.
Regarding his recent meeting with party leaders in Delhi, Wadettiwar clarified that discussions centered exclusively on the trade pact and its agricultural implications. He elaborated, "The new agreement will harm farmers in India. Cotton, maize, tur, and soybean growers in Maharashtra will be hit hard." He alleged that under the agreement, goods imported from the US would attract zero percent duty, while Indian exports would face a 10% tariff, calling this an "unequal policy" that could devastate farmers.
To illustrate the potential impact, Wadettiwar noted current market prices: cotton is selling at ₹4,500 per quintal, maize at ₹1,500, and soybean prices have seen a sharp decline.
Additional Criticisms: Infrastructure, Education, and Law & Order
Wadettiwar extended his criticism to other areas, accusing the government of prioritizing land acquisition for the Shaktipeeth highway project over farmers' concerns and of taking action against protesting cultivators. He further raised alarms about education and public safety in Maharashtra.
- Education Crisis: He alleged that 22,000 schools have shut across the state, with 4,000 operating without teachers, claiming a deliberate move to close Marathi schools in Mumbai.
- Law & Order: Expressing concern over incidents in Sinnar and Badlapur, Wadettiwar stated that law and order have deteriorated and demanded the formation of a special investigation team to address these issues.
Congress Resolute Despite Legal Challenges
Referring to Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, Wadettiwar affirmed that legal cases would not deter the Congress party from continuing its political fight. He emphasized the party's commitment to addressing the concerns raised, from trade policies to social issues, despite any obstacles.
The leader's statements underscore a multifaceted critique of current policies, blending local political defense with broader socio-economic grievances, as the Congress prepares for coordinated protests and continued opposition.
