Punjab Congress Leader Welcomes Law Amendment, Demands Action Timeline
In a significant political development from Chandigarh, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Monday expressed his approval for the recent amendments to the state's anti-sacrilege law. However, he simultaneously issued a strong demand for the establishment of a concrete deadline to punish those found guilty of sacrilege offenses.
Warring Questions Government Sincerity and Intentions
The Ludhiana Member of Parliament stated that there was never any doubt about the Punjab Vidhan Sabha passing the amendments to the sacrilege legislation. "Who will not like the culprits of sacrilege to be severely punished?" Warring remarked, acknowledging the theoretical strength of the legal changes.
Nevertheless, the Congress leader delivered pointed criticism toward the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government. "Periodical passages of law and amendments do not, and will not serve any purpose if the intentions of the governments passing such laws are not sincere," Warring asserted. He directly accused the AAP administration of failing on this crucial count of sincerity and genuine commitment.
Reminder of Unfulfilled Election Promises
Warring recalled that before the 2022 assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party had made specific claims regarding sacrilege cases. "The ruling Aam Aadmi Party had claimed before the 2022 assembly elections that if voted to power, it will punish the guilty within no time," he reminded the public and political observers.
The Congress president argued that the situation has essentially returned to square one despite these previous assurances. He emphasized that the government faced no legal obstacles in punishing the guilty under existing anti-sacrilege laws, suggesting instead that the administration lacked the necessary political will and sincerity to take decisive action.
Call for Concrete Timeline and Accountability
With the amended legislation now awaiting the Governor's assent, Warring posed a direct challenge to the AAP government. "After having empowered itself with a more stringent law, subject to the Governor's assent, would the AAP government give a timeline as to when it will do justice in the matter?" he questioned.
The Punjab Congress chief insisted that only through establishing a clear deadline would the public develop genuine trust in the government's intentions. "Let it set a deadline. Only then will people believe that the government is sincere," Warring stated unequivocally.
He concluded with a warning that without such concrete commitments, the entire legislative exercise might be perceived as merely theatrical. "Otherwise, it will be yet another theatrical exercise by those who are known to be the masters of political theatrics," he added, delivering a final critique of the ruling party's approach to this sensitive issue.
